Large angels in a reef

My emp was large when i bought it. He is fine so far with corals.
He did take a liking to my sponges and featherdusters.

I saw quite a few P.imperator in reefs with Euphyllias.
Never had any problem.
So you have quite a good chance.
It doesnt mean to say that your particular specimen wont think Euphyllia is lunch.
:D

This is a great thread as I'm debating whether to take the chance with a large angel in my soon to be 240. I know I"m safe with the Genicanthus Sp. angels, but I'd love to have a large angel. I plan to have a mixture of all corals, but mostly LPS and softies. I'll be following this thread to see what other people's experiences are with the large Angels!

Amanda

Euphylia corals seem to be safe with angels as they have some sort of toxin that deterds them from picking at them.

yeah keep the advice coming. I can't aford a conspiculatus angel yet and even if I did Have the money the wife would kill me when I told her the price. Plus if anything were to good bad in the tank and I happen to lose that fish I would have to kill my self and that wouldn't be a good thing lol.

I think what I will try sdoing is adding a smaller adult queen and see how it works other wise idk what other large ones I like. The impoertor is nice but it doesn't jump at me you know what I mean?

I have had a nararchus in my tank for about 3.5 years. Beautiful fish, not great on zoos and an opportunistic feeder on anything that is on its way out (including sps and frogspawn).

I am trying to decide between a blue face or an imperator as my next (and last) fish.

I'm thinking of getting an emperor for my reef but i'm worried he will nip at zoanthids and LPS corals.

Bill

Some angels will go after Acanthastrea, yet you will find another fish of the same species to not go after it at all. I had an emperor that took a liking to my elegance so he had to go, then i tried another that would not touch anything.

Julio, as for LPS I have 2 plate corals, candy cane, acanthastrea, blastomussa, torch and 3 enchophyllia.

What ones do you think he will be more likley to go after?

Bill

Acans and blasto's is mainly what i hear large angels going after.
Lobo's, favia, micromussa would be considered more of a risk like the above i mentioned.
The meaty type lps corals is what they will have a greater risk with.
Torch, frogspawn, hammers and platecorals are pretty safe because they are more noxious. But nothings 100 % safe.
I have heard of them going after millies and hairl polyp sps.
You get them liking your prepaired foods and keep some sponge in there to naw on and they will preffere the sponge.
Atleast mine does. Every so ofter it will inspect the orange finger sponge and take a nip.

Hey Bill,
i think he will go after you candy cane for sure, blasto and acanthasthreas are usually dependant on the fish. I have a frined who has a tank full of blasto and full grown emperor and he only went after his acanthastrea, so is all dependant on the personality of hte fish.

I have had a navarchus for about 4 years and I think everyone's comments are right on. As I said, I am going to take a chance on either a jv emporator or blue face. I cannot decide. Please help me!!!!!!

I have an emperor, and am considering a blue face but don't know if they are compatable.

well many books and ppl say that juvi's work better than adults. But imo i think a fish is going to do what its going to do. I would try a small adult and then make plans to get it out if there are any problems. ohh and I would prob. go w/ a blue face if it has some nice color.

Hey Kent,
if your emperor is a juvie they will grow up together just fine. But as adults you would have to add them to the tank at the same time to diffuse any thought of competition between the two.
