Large Marineland DD tank failures

From the failures I've read about, the root cause usually seems to either be a flaw in the stand construction or design, or poor craftsmanship around the seams.

Having a tank failure, particularly a big one, is an experience I hope never to have. Yet, on some level this is an absurd thread. EVERY tank manufacturer who has enough products out in the marketplace will have failures - I'd view with suspicion, any who said they did not. What is key is the failure rate, and does Marineland have a higher level than other manufacturers? I don't know, suspect nobody does here on RC, and a few horrible experiences don't help us to the number.

Another DD Failure

Another DD Failure

My 200DD failure ended up nice....Marineland replace my tank and all my Fish....on the Sad end one off the follow refer that came to help me on the day my 200 failed has had the same issue last night, is 300 DD sprunk a lead the exact same way....tank was less than 2 years old on concrete floor....hopefully Marineland will be good with him like they were with me !

A few glass cages tanks here going on 10 years old; no leaky leaky :) 9 times out of 10 a tank failure is the direct result of improper support or setup.

Yeah, I'm inclined to agree; but there are also bad tanks clearly. I ran a 180, that is essentially a Glass Cages clone (well, maybe GC are the clones) from 1988 to 2008 before selling it - and as far as I know it's still holding up. So tanks can and do last a long time. I now have a ML 265 and have my fingers crossed that I'll have no problems with it (almost 1 year setup).

That's really encouraging to hear that Marineland took care of you, especially the fish. They were in no way obligated to do so, since their warranty states livestock is not covered. Here's an important note for all big tank owners to pay attention: Check your homeowners policy about their coverage. Most are very restrictive on what they will cover regarding such things as fish tank leaks. It is definitely better to have a discussion with your agent before something bad happens!

I have a 220 marineland tank on a custom stand built out of 2x6's and 2x4's. Its on the main floor of my house that is over a basement. I took great care in reinforcing the floor with floor supports and extra joist, building a square strong stand. All joints are connected with pocket screws and glue. I even removed the flooring/tile under the stand to give it a nice contact service to sit on. I used shims all the way around the base to make sure the stand was nice and level. The shims are side by side with no gaps in between. My tank is coming up on a year old and is still running fine and still level and plum. I Can promise that my stand it stronger than the marineland stands. Any custom stand built is usually over kill, like mine.

Failures can and are going to happen, its the beast of the hobby. A &80,000 car can still drop a transmission. Crap happens, doesnt mean its going to happen to every car. But what does matter is how that company or manufacture deals with the crisis at hand to help resolve the issue to get a customer back up and running.

Does anyone know how long the warranty is for marineland tanks?

I have a 150 Deep and I caught mine before it let go. Mine is 3 years old. Thought about fixing it, but they say a reseal will never be as strong as the first seal. 150 gallons of salt water on the floor is very scary.

I have my tank in a peninsula style so I can walk around the tank. I had noticed the seal in the back panel at the bottom had a bright spot (i have black silicone) when i looked down the glass pane. I had been watching it for a few weeks to see if it was getting bigger. Anyway I missed a few weeks and when I went to check it again there was less then 1/4" silicone by about 3 inches long holding on 1/2" glass at that spot.

I drained the tank immediately, 8:30pm to 2:00am on a Wednesday night by my self. Moved all coral and fish to a empty 40g that i had used as a fish quaratine, which had at one time used copper in it to treat ich. The coral seem to be doing ok, its been a week now. That saying you can never use a tank that had copper in it because it soaks into the silicone might be a myth.

davandwilk, were you using a ML stand, or a custom? I was reading another thread here, I believe for custom stand it is only a 1 year warranty, and 20 years (perhaps 25) for a ML stand.

Here's the warranty from our 300DD

Wanted to add my 2 cents- I am new to the forum.
Just had a similar experience with my 120 gallon Perfecto. Woke up at 2:00 in the morning to the sound of the filter spraying water on a less than full tank, knew it was a problem because I had done a water change the day before and both spray bars were submerged. Spent the next four hours trying to save my fish, and siphon out as much water as possible. The tank was leaking profusely from the bottom.
My tank was purchased new 2 1/2 years ago. I have contacted Perfecto, they are supposed to email what they need, but said it is only a one year warranty.
I lost a bunch of fish-some I had for four/five years, from when they were small. What a disaster.

I do not have the nerve now to go back to 120g. I can only keep thinking, what if it happens again.
I donated most of my fish to LFS, did not want them all to die.

Why did it fail ?

Why did it fail ?

Just got the result back from Engineering firm mandated by the insurance company....

Sorry for the French but in clear the tank failed because on missing silicone between bottom panel and sidewall...resulting in lost of adherance and catastrophic failure. Finition joint will hold for some time but will gave up due to structural failure.

Marineland Tank have structural issues !
