Large Tankers - What Skimmer You Using?

vijaym85: If you are talking about mine, no it's not, but I appreciate the compliment! For real DIY, it certainly is a beast and runs very efficiently on just 120W. I am still experimenting with super-charging it because I believe that as my system grows, it will need more skimming. Anyone can build a skimmer exactly like mine with virtually no prior experience or special tools.

Then again, after the "Miracle Mud" lecture, maybe I shouldn't be skimming??

And BTW, it cost about $600 to build. :D

I never would have imagined air stones could power such a tall skimmer. Actually I checked out the air pump your using and its a monster! Very good job and from you pics i can see its doing what it was made to do. Nice work!

Do you have seperate air and water injection controls to regulate levels within your skimmer?

Considering the pressure built up from such a large column of water I don't regulate the air flow at all. It's flat out! I did install a gate valve on the outflow of the skimmer combined with a Hartford loop to control the water level. It turns out I really didn't need the gate valve as I leave it all the way open and allow about 600g/hr to flow through. The level is essentially controlled by the Hartford loop, which is adjustable for height.

Here is my new RK2 9 foot tall 15" diameter skimmer.

I would to, except since my tank is in the basement, so that would put the collection cup in the master bedroom:D

The great thing is I dont have to take the collection cup off as it has a auto wash down mister system.

Can you explain or take pictures of the washdown system? I am thinking about adding that to my skimmer.

when he sees the power bill to run that rk2 he will make his own skimmate in his shorts. lol
i bet its about $3 a day to run that skimmer. im dsure he will convert it over to a dart needle wheel with in a few months. once sequence starts selling them anyways.
