latazyo's new 40BR tank build thread

this is the new 40BR I bought....this thread will be just as detailed as my old one

my old tank build thread can be seen BY CLICKING HERE

I am gonna just swap the tanks on the stand that the old tank is on

anyways....

Tank : 40BR All-glass aquarium w/ glass overflow and hole drilled for 1.25" drain
Lighting : 1x175w MH, pfo parallel reflector, 15KK iwasaki bulb, Ice Cap ballast....2x39w T5 actinic supplementation (to be added at a later date)
Sump & other equipment : as described in my previous build
Return pump : Mag 9.5

not quite sure about livestock yet, but I figured out that the 40BR actually has a bigger footprint than a 55, so that's pretty cool...should open up some fish options

here is the overflow I made being siliconed in...note that I have NEVER been accused of doing a clean siliconing job

this is a DIY bulkhead that IM using on this tank....why? because that is the size holesaw I had access to and witha DIY PVC bulkhead I can run 1.25" drain instead of just 1"

here is the canopy being painted...flat black and white as always

here are the doors installed and painted...unfortunately the huge reflector for the MH doesnt leave much space despite the doors

I got some pretty sweet fans for the hood...Ive got two of them

and here is the gutter guard Im using to keep snails and fish in the tank and not in the overflow...it was $1.26 at Home Depot and Im painting it black

we must have used the wrong bit, I went to lowes and bought 1.5" and come outside and checked it in my car and it didnt fit

only the 1.25" fitting works

the fans are from newegg.com its where I get all of my computer ****

I got dual 120mm fans 78CFM, they seem pretty hardcore, but I bet they'll be loud as hell

It'll be interesting to see what you choose to do with your 40 breeder I should post pics of mine sometime, but I want to wait until things grow out a bit.

As a side note, I recommend newegg for anything and everything...they're great, it's too bad they don't sell reef stuff :lol:

yeah, its going to have very little live rock in it

probably two islands

not sure about fish yet

the 20L that is plumbed into it will have softies and a damsel and some other stuff that is not reef friendly

I also started a .9 gallon cube..its so small, I filled it up and carried it around

did the leak testing yesterday and it was a huge success

here is the overflow box, it did not leak....but with 10 pounds of silicone on the joints I guess I dont see how it could have

and here is the DIY bulkhead - NOT LEAKING!
when I installed the 1.25" "bulkhead" it was pretty loose, so I reamed the hole out a little with the dremel and it now fits 1.5"

so 1.5" drain in a 2" hole....not bad at all

I may or may not post finished canopy pics tonight

well my holesaw guy finally came through so I got the canopy fans installed and wired

here is the view from inside...I mounted them crooked so that the screws for the fan and the screws from the outside cover would not hit each other

I hope those are quiet. You actually ordered different ones than I was talking about with you. Those are 78cfm @ 34 dB. The others were 76cfm@21 db.

Roy, I didnt notice that you went on a 34 post posting spree while I was replying to Schplitter

- yeah that saw is so awesome, they're less than 100 bucks (if you get an off brand like mine) and it is so handy for everything....I use a jigsaw for cutting plywood because I hate circular saws

I need a panel saw (haha)

anyways, yeah I got the 78cfm fans...they're quieter than the 2" fan on my t5 fixture...and that is both of them

the fan covers I got at Gateway Electronics for $1 each

they had some foam in them but it had disintegrated (think he keeps stock on hand very long?) but that is good because I didnt want it at all....so as a result they're sticky w/ glue, but I put them in the sink w/ dish soap for about 30 seconds and they were perfectly clean

since Im graduating in exactly 2 years and I dont plan on bringing any aquarium stuff with me when I move I am going to be doing a lot of experimenting and cost cutting with this set up, just to see what happens

I made a little bit more progress this week...it was the first week of class so I was sort of busy

I have been working a lot on eel proofing the setup

here is my solution for the overflow protection, it is gutter guard that I carefully bent and it is staying on pretty well

and here is the back of the canopy

and here is the schplitter loop I made for the return flow into the tank
