more boxes

box #1. reeflex cube 250w magnetic hqi ballasts x3 I chose hqi ballasts because i'll be running radium bulbs and these ballasts should over drive them to spec.

box #2. reflectors. I sold the lumenmax elites because i was going to scratch the build. when i decided to complete the build, i chose the large coralvue lumen brights because i believe they will give me better spread to cover the 36" depth. (i will also be running 4x54w t5s). i'll take some better pics with a real camera when i unwrap them.

these things are freaking huge (20x20x9.5"). son #2 posing to show the size. lol.

Subscribed... I'm planning a similar build (at least similar dimensions) and would like to see how everything turns out for you.

I've got 4 LumenMax Elites (the same ones you had before, but the Double Ended bulbs) and hope that those along with 2 36" 4-bulb T-5 fixtures in the front will provide enough coverage on a tank that is 84"L X 36"W X 26"T.

Build is looking good though!

i think they light will reach the bottom of the tank. i used them on my 220 which is 30inches tall and was told no problem lighting the bottom. and i didnt have an issue

Thank you, still following the build, do you think 250 watt is enough to penetrate to the bottom on a 27" deep tank.

Also kind of depends on what you plan on keeping on the sandbed... might be difficult to keep higher light corals/clams, but you could probably pull off pretty much everything else.

I think if you invest in a good bulb, ballast, and reflector 250w should be more than enough to keep sps in 90% of the tank. plus the hqi ballasts over drive the bulbs a bit. I have t5s (ati powermodule 8 bulb) on my 120g which is 25" tall and i have some sps in the sand b/c it's too much light higher in the tank.

thanks. i had scratched the build and sold the elites. if i knew i was going to contune the build, i would have never bothered switching to coralvue (i dont think it makes a huge difference). i think with 4 reflectors and t5s you'll be fine.

agreed. i had crappy 250w mhs on my old 220 which was 30" as well and i kept some stuff in the sand that seemed to get plenty of light.

I'm sure your post office hates you! LOL

lol.

that's another thing i considered. my sand bed and lower portions of the tank are going to have quite a few lps and i didn't want to pulverize them.

Hey Launchnukes - I have a favor to ask .... I am getting ready to order a Marineland 300G DD tank and want to start on the stand. Was the finished dimensions of your tank 72x36 or was it slightly larger due to the framing on the bottom?

The outside of the bottom trim is 72x36

I love these large tank build threads. Can't wait until I can do my own build thread. Looking good so far. Can't wait to see it completed.

time for and update. boy have i been busy the last few weeks. 120 is broken down and outta the way, fish room is completed, qt system is up, electrician has wired everything, tank is in place, rockwork done, plumbing 30% done, stand is 90% done, canopy will be done by the end of next week. I'll get some pics of plumbing, fish room, and qt when everything gets cleaned up.

first, the stand. we decided to turn the tank into a bar by having the wood workers add a 10" ledge to the three viewable sides of the stand. stand is 41" tall plus a 2.5" trim to cover the bottom trim on the tank. the bar ledge is 39" tall, a perfect height for a few bar stools. the wood workers still need to finish the bottom of the stand, they are going to add decorative feet to each corner and a trim piece to cover the shims (my floor is horribly un-level).

next, rockwork. pics are horrible with the glare and it's hard to see the depth and ledges but i guess something is better than nothing. also, i need to add some more sand.

beautiful stand, but the bar around seems like it is really going to be in the way for maintenance, particularly when you are getting to the middle/back of the tank. I suppose you already have a good feel for that while installing the rock work. What did you do to avoid standing on the bar?

NICE dimensions on tank but really loving that stand. This week I saw 2 really innovative stand configs. Yours withe the ledge and the other was a sump on castors that roll the entire sump out for 100% access. Wild...Learn new things everyday.
