Learning curve; with mushrooms

My tank is 14 days old; a friend gave me three mushrooms. I’m running 2 T5s and a MJ 1200 in my 20 nano. Do mushrooms need direct light or shade and high/low water flow? Do I need to add supplements? Thank You.

direct light? med. is good, about a third up from the bottom.
flow? low or just under moderate.
Supplements? water change of 25% weekly, you shouldnt need any supplements.
the only ones i use are ALK, CaCl12, and Mg. only to boost my parms up to almost max. SPS dominated...

FWIW, if you keep you Mg. 3X's your Ca level, your parms will stay more stable. :D

yeah, they will do fine w/ low light and low/moderate flow! At least thats where my mushrooms migrated to over teh years

Your biggest problem is that your tank is only 14 days old. Keep up on water changes, especially if they look stressed.

14 days old? Did your water cycle that quick? Your tank needs to go through the biological cycle to stabilize and you should wait a couple months before adding any corals. Your mushrooms are most likely stressed because of that.

i would add a two part solution for calcium/alkalinity. i have had success with Kent Marine NanoReef A and B in some of my small tanks. it also will provide some trace minerals

i agree. the bacteria in your tank are going to need some time to get to populations high enough to clean the water well, you will also get a lot of algae in stages early because of the dirty water, aka cycling. this process takes a few months

because you have put corals in your tank early you are going to have to work a lil harder if you want to keep them healthy, not that they will definitely die if you are lazy but if you do a water change a week for the first four or so weeks your tank will be much happier, then taper them off until three months only do one a month or so. mushrooms are hardy anyway

good luck
