LED progress pics

Serpentman u said, u will look back n say y did I ever put that junk over my tank. Honestly, what would possibly be the next light source I don't see anything else other than leds in the future. I'd like to hear what u think. IMO, leds r a good route but way to expensive atm. I'll stick to metal halides until they mass produce the right led setup at an affordable cost. +1 Kevin u had a good point as to when u'll actually start saving money because the initial start up is up there. Anyways, this is an excellent setup n can't wait to see this experiment at work. Let us know if the growth of the sps corals is slower or about the same as MH, that should be interesting..

I'm on t5 lighting now, but I can w/o a doubt say that after looking at builds like this... when I go to do my bigger tank, it'll be LED from the start

Wow Jeff you can really see the shadowing on the Soli for example. It looks awesome other wise. Great job.

Thanks dude. Yeah, its as bad in person as in the pics. You know me, no way that'll fly. Would drive me crazy. Definitely will need to fill in the gaps.

Plasma technology has the potential to beat out LED's. However, IMO LED technology is just ramping up. When I made that comment, I was basically inferring that the LED's we have today will be considered junk by the LED's of tomorrow. Every 6mos or so they increase efficiency by 30%. That a significant jump in a short time span.

Is that close to where you have braces for your tank?
Yeah. The tank braces are heavy duty 3" across. I'm going to have to situate a row on each side and angle them so they shoot under the braces and kill the shadow.

Looking Good Jeff, so when can I stop out to check the system out? PM if ok to come out!

PM sent.

Do you think that plasma will be able to compete with the 50,000 hour life span of the LEDs?

30% every six months :fun5: Maybe I should wait to do LEDs. Then again the price will also go up about 30% every six months.

not true, if that were the case we'd be spending millions on household computers we run today.

Competition pushes the technology forward, and as better processes come up for manufacturing, it drives the cost down-ward. Think of it like computer processors... They keep getting smaller by advances in manufacturing, which reduces the heat they put off, and increases their effeciency, all the while making them cheaper to produce.

10 years ago you would pay $3,000 for a solid top of the line 200mhz computer, with a single core. Now for under that price, you can have a 6 core, 3.0ghz computer which is 17.2ghz more processing power for less money.

That's the way electronics work, in basically every aspect from computers, to radios, to tv's, hell even things as miniscule as an LED :)
