Yeah, no kidding. Isn't the only way you can run two timers in series is if they both receive power?
Leonardo, you need some sort of Digital timer, that is for sure. The mentioned Profilux would be so nice on your tank. That or the new Neptune that is coming out.

Yes its a nice unit but if the contacts stick on the controller or on its power bar as well, the computer will not know this so you will run into the same situation if they stick.
I found out that if you are running an magnetic ballast you don't need a special timer because its a inductive load like motors. But if you run electronic ballasts it is recommend that you run specific timers because of frequency loss through the timer.Thats the reason of UL approval for specific timers. Also don't run timers more than 70%of there capacity.
I not sure how to run them but horticulture farms run there lighting on timers controlled with a relay. This allows them to remove a fairly cheap relay after a period of time for a new one. You can get them with many amp ratings. Also you can get some relays with a clear glass so you can actually see the contacts condition eg carboned up or corroded.
Your safest best is with relay which you can toss away after a while and put a new one. Doing that with a controller it can get very expensive.

Nick, thanks for mentioning the Profilux. I think it is a very nice unit. But I'm always afraid if you let everything depend on one unit, the system is more vulnerable for failure. If the unit fails, the whole tank is down.
I like to spread the risks and have a separate controller for all the functions. But you're right there has to happen something to prevent such disaster.
Besides that I'm still a "poor" student, and at the moment I prefer to spend my money on nice corals then a (also nice) controlling computer.
scaryperson27; You can run two digital timers in series, because most of them have a backup battery, so they will continue to work, even if they aren't getting power.

Glad I can continue this thread on RC, I'm very happy that we're back. Now it is time for an update I think....

A few pages back I desribed the new plans for my Lagoon. These include:
*90 degree turn of the tank, making it peninsular and 3-side viewable.
*Adding a layer of Aragonite sand.
*Finalizing and improve the aquascape.
*Covering the Lightrack with Foamed PVC plate + cooling.
*Adding more corals and livestock.
Last week I began the transition. The whole rebuild isn't finished yet, so more updates will follow later.
Cooking the dry Aragonite sand in used tankwater. I used several Aragonite grain sizes and a bag of Caribsea Reef-grade LiveSand to make the sandbed look natural.
This sand has been cooking for 1,5 month.
I found some large dry coral skeletons to create an aquascape. I'm not sure if I will use them all (or at all), But I have something to work with now.
First, they were cleaned using a high pressure power washer.
After the cleaning they were sun dried/bleached.
Then they were cooked in used tank water for two months.

These coral branches are VERY porous, but very strong and heavy.
They were this strong, that I had to use a concrete powerdrill to get a hole through them
Of course every rebuild demand a large supply of saltwater. I decided to perform a 50% waterchange with new saltwater.
After three EXHAUSTING days, the tank has it's new place. A 3-side viewable peninsular Lagoon!
Now the "only" thing I have to do is filling up the tank, replumbing, redo the electrical part, and aquascaping...
In the meantime all my corals are patiently waiting for their improved home... In this last photo you see some of my large colonies.

You're right, moving a thread isn't very easy. One photo left, I almost forgot it. This is my small side table with all the daily dosing stuff and watertests etc.
More updates when I get some more work done!!

But you're right most of the equipment is from Germany and easily available. Jeff, the bottle next to the Vodka is HCL (hydrochloric acid 1 MOL) I used it to clean my pumps after they clogged up with calcium during the disaster.
Don't mistaken them when you having a party though!

Glad to see everyone back and happy again.
I also saw that you were worried about having to move your "popular" thread. Maybe I am different, but I was looking forward to more outside time than me time. Sitting behind a computer can do cazy things to a mans pysche. I'm just glad we have a place where we can share our experiences.
