Leonardo's Lagoon

Leonardo, It's funny your building a reef crest tank, because that's what I currently have, sort of. Thing is, I modeled it after your formosa forest. I have a 30X30X17 deep tank, with 5 large pieces of rock, all sps corals placed right below the water's surface at about 8 inches deep maximum with a 250 14k DE over it with T5 supplimental lighting.

Also too, the two corals doing best in my tank, and growing like weeds are my blue tipped stag and my bright green stag. lol

You always seem to be a step ahead, I love the new tank design. When my corals grow in more I will post a pic, right now their babies.

best of luck with your new design

Maybe somthing like this:

dv0920; Thanks for your compliment and I'm curious to see the aquascape of your tank :) Make sure to post a picture when you think the tank is ready ;)

danfrith; Thanks for posting that picture! It is another good example in nature I would like to recreate in my Lagoon.

Thanks for the reactions, Leonardo

leonardo, definately loved your other tank thread. One of my favourite reefs that I have ever seen in my life, colors of fish and corals were amazing.

best of luck on your new build, can't wait to see how it turns out

definitely an inspiring aquarist you are Leonardo - both of your projects i have followed and finally am subscribing to this thread to keep within the suspense loop :D

you got PM :o

Thanks memorisa! I haven't recieved your PM though...

Yesterdag I bought an 6 rpm (2'/min.) Intellidrive Light rail system.

LIGHT%20RAIL%203,5%20INTELLIDRIVE.jpg

This will move the pendant from one side to the other in less then 2 minutes.
I will DIY build a pendant holding 2 lumenarcs (front to back), moonlight, cooling and maybe some supplemental T5.

In theory the lumenarcs on this rail will give the same spread as placing lumenarcs everywhere above the tank. The difference is the intensity and duration of lighting.
Some studies have shown that corals grow better if you provide them variabel light intensities during the day (will have some theoretical background later).
Because the duration of lighting at one spot is shorter compared to a fixed pendant, I have to test how many hours a day I have to fire the bulbs.

I don't worry about dark/light spots because the Lumenarcs have great spread and some lighter/darker areas can give the tank more depth etc.

That is one cool tank!... The more I see these shallow tanks the more I really like the lagoon inspired aquascaping.... I really need to get crack'n and finish building my shallow reef tank..

Can't wait to see some more progress!

GSMguy; I am planning to move the lights all day. I would like to provide an even light spread all over the tank, all the time. Do you think it will be too much and doesn't look good?

LooseHip; Thanks! :) Good luck with the build.

Memorisa; I have send you a PM

Leonardo

Only time will tell but it might get annoying for it to move all day, the alternative would be to put the mover itself on a timer so that it only moves once an hour, you will have to decide if you like it, it might be very nice and it might be weird to come to the tank and see the lights moving constantly. I cant wait to see this tank up and running

I've seen a tank with a light mover and it was annoying to me. Maybe having it move on a timer or just once every day would be more appealing.

I agree with but Nick and Darrly....I personally have no experience in a moving light but can imagine if it just does not stop moving?? As Nick suggest, maybe on a timer and it moves every hour will not be too bad... :)

Hey Leonardo- Great thread. I've been following it attentively and love the 'shallow reef' and lagoon style. Hope to have tank like that someday.

Thought I'd share with you what I did with my lights and see if perhaps its a viable solution or gives you ideas.

I'm using a controller (ReefKeeper Elite) and I have the lights timed to do what I think is a good replica of the daily light cycle in nature.

Here's my light cycle:
1) 7am - moon LEDs turn off. Refuge light turns off. 4 actinic tubes turn on in the back of the tank
2) 8 am - front actinics turn on.
3) 12pm - left MH turns on
4) 1pm center MH turns on
5) 2pm right MH turns on
6) 5pm left MH turns off
7) 6pm center MH turns off
8) 7pm right MH turns off, refugium light turns onn
9) 10pm front actinics go off
10) 11pm back actinics go off, moonlight LEDs power on.

Rinse and repeat :D

Hope this helps! I will post this on my thread too for comments/feedback.

Best, Itay

I am also looking at doing a pair of light movers on my next system. I have seen tanks with them, and the movers have been set to move so slowly that unless you are really watching the lights move, its hard to tell. However, the two tanks I've seen also used supplemental lighting at the same time.

Great tank! I had a lagoon inspired tank for a while (still kind of do) and it was so much fun putting it together!

Are you going to actually go for a true Lagoon tank? Most people say they are setting up a Lagoon but actually end up with more of an Atoll. An actual lagoon is the water BEHIND an Atoll or sand bar. Low flow, mostly sand with very little rock, high nutrient soft corals, macro, all kinds of algae, ect. ? I bet you already mentioned this but I guess I missed it. Im always excited to see if someone actually ends up with a real lagoon...I really want to see this created in a home aquarium but I think its pretty hard to do. I wanted to do it but ended up with this, below, which was not actually a lagoon but "lagoon inspired" :)

Either way, this will be a very nice tank!
