Leonardo's Lagoon

Leonardo, i am also interested in the cryptic zone information as well.

ME 2. I have been planning on using one on my new tank as well.

Leonardo,

I'm interested in reading up on Cryptic Refugiums. Could you share any links?

My current reef system has lots of different sponges growing and continue to grow quite rapidly. They seem to grow in low flow and low light areas of the rock work.

Thanks Dougie!

Eric, I rather put this chair in front of the tank, if I could affort it :o

I will dose a 3-part vitamin and Trace Element mixture with the Grotech TECIII
Calcium and Alkalinity is provided by the Schuran Jetstream 2 and the Schuran Kalkwasser-reactor.

KZ also uses this kind of overflow. It has two benefits for me;

Because of the large overflow, surface skimming is much better then a traditional overflow.
Because of the large surface splashing noises from the wave (wavebox) will be less then a smaller overflow box.

Leonardo, did you use a ca rx on your last tank? I thought you used the bailing method on the FF? Why the change?

I used the Balling-Method on the FF. I was getting tired of making the Balling solutions all the time, thats why I bought a CaRX + a KalkwasserRX.
I think the combination of these two create more stable parameters without the drawback of a pH drop (exess CO2)

Leonardo

How do you plan on monitoring your CaRX and KalkRX? Are you going to monitor the effluent, the tank, or both, to make your reactor adjustments?

I will monitor the pH inside the CaRX. The amount of effluent is ajusted to match the Ca en Alk usage.
Kalkwasser is added constantly during night and morning.
In the afternoon new kalkwasser is mixed etc. This is a fixed amount per day. I will decide what amount is needed after tesing pH during some time.

An example of a large table formation. I want to create several formations using mostly tabling Acropora and some different species.

hey Leo!

What fishes are you planning to keep? Are you still going with Acanthurus Guttatus? That would be a sight to behold, since that species is rarely seen around here.. let alone create a biotope for one.

From fishbase:
Preserved color is brown; spotted, white spots usually bordered with dark brown (may help conceal it in turbulent water that is often filled with small bubbles). Occurs in surge zone of clear seaward reefs (Ref. 9710, 58302). mainly oceanic and found schooling in shallow depths over reef flats subject to surge or currents (Ref. 48637). Browses on filamentous and calcareous algae. Forms schools.

Now in regards to your wavebox, have you done a test run just to see how much of a wave it'll make?

Anyways, I've subscribed to your thread.. I'll be waiting for some updates ;)

Those Type corals should make for an impressive display!!!

But it will be hard to top the formosa forest!!!!

How is the build coming?

Chris

xtm, I didn't test the wavebox in this tank yet. I will do a tapwater test for leaks etc. Then I will do a wavbox test also, mainly to ajust the overflow teeth before I glue it into the correct height.

I know the Guttatus is a rare fish. I have had one before, unfortunately it jumped out after a few months. It was and still is my favorite fish.
As you see in the fishbase quote this species is perfect for this type of tank :)
This is a picture of the Guttatus I had in my old tank before:

reefer334; I will have an update this weekend. Build is going well ;)

Nice to see people trying unique things.

With only 14" in an open topped aquarium, are you not worried a Guttatus will jump again?

Thank you Mark. I will make sure I don't lose a Guttatus again. Every fish has value because it is a living animal, but this fish is rarely available so that makes it a bit more important to me.
I will do several things to make the chance of another jump as small as possible;

I will make a net that I will put over the tank at night (the fish that I lost, I lost at night)
I wil install moonlight that reduce panic reactions at night.
I will create enough hiding places for the Guttatus (and the other fish of course)

Giga, it is an honour to hear that my ideas only has inspired you to do this. I hope you will get more inspiration out of my project after seeing the actual tank :)

btw Chris (reefer334), this tank will beat the Formosa Forest ;)

Leonardo

Chris Ward (cward) gave me permission to use some of the pictures of his Oct 2006 TOTM.

This tank has been an inspiration for the Formosa Forest, and will be a source of inspiration for my Lagoon also.
The Staghorns in this tank has been an inspiration before, now the tables in this tank has inspired me.

I will show you a few photo's to give an impression of the thing I want to create.

The FF has inspired me to collect stags.. I now have A. Formosa, A. Yongei, A. Microphthalma, and several others that I can't ID. My goal is to have them grow into massive colonies just like the FF tank. I'm sure you will inspire more people with this new project ;)

some info

some info

Hello leonardo and all others. Don't mean to spoil anything but I am also setting up a cryptic zone in my refugium. Thought this could add to this thread and help some. If someone is in the process of setting it up it is fairly simple. Below is my fuge I am building for my 210 setup. Here is the link for the build thread if anyone is interested: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1428947

The way I am setting up my cryptic zone is as follows. I have built an egg crate structure to place inside the refugium chamber of my sump. The structure is fairly simple to build and anyone can do it. I have built up the structure so that there is a "shelf" so to speak for the rocks to sit on in the refugium. the rocks sit on a shelf and completely above the sand. The chaeto will be above the rocks absorbing the light. there will be an area of 2-3 inches of space between the rocks and the sand. the rocks will block all the light from reaching the sand so the entire area between the rocks and sand will have surface area for cryptic organisms to grow. Also this will prevent any dead spots on the sand which can be difficult for substrate dwellers to reach and ultimately harvest detritus. Make sure you build the structure tall enough so that the "legs" stick out a few inches above the sand. A 4 inch sand bed should have a 6-8 inch tall structure.

I have also built the structure with a removable top piece in case I have to reach the surface of the sand without having to remove the entire structure.
