Let Them Flash!

Hiroyuki, can you help me identify these two new additions? I believe one of them is a simple Filament wrasse, he's got about 6 or 7 filaments and his fins are a bright purple. The other, may be a blue flasher? Both have a whole bunch of filamented fin rays but only the one that I believe to be a blue flasher will display them. The first two pix are what I believe is a Filamentous, the others are the one that I think is a Blue Flasher on the very first day I got him. I only paid $29 for each of them and have really enjoyed them so far.
Filamentous?

I cannot identify the 1st two specimens, but your suspicion maybe right.

2nd is filamentosus/ 3rd and 4th are cyaneus. I can not tell the 5th fish.

If you can see fine dots between the lines on side it is Blue Flasher; if there is no dots there and it looks plain it will be Filamented. Also the top of head of Blue Flasher often is greeninsh, and body is reddish totally, while Filamented is yellowish red to orange.

Ok, some pictures of one of my P. attenuatus. They do not look the same. I have a female scheduled to arrive on Tuesday. By the way, I am a terrible aquarium photographer. Maybe worse than that.

I have two males and a female. The largest one is about 60mm, the smaller one (male) is about 50mm. The larger one has more pronounced coloration.

Sorry about screwing up the images on the prior posts. This is the larger male, about 60 mm

Steve how are they doing? My big male is very dominating. He puts a mystery wrasse about his size in his place all day long. These guys are amazing especially when they flash. Ill try to take a better pic of him. I have a crappy digital camera.

newest addition

newest addition

Here is my newest addition. He looks to be a blue flasher, I assume, possibly filamented flasher? Still in the bag acclimating and I hope to have some in-tank photos over the next few days.

got zoanthids?

This flasher was sold to me as McCosker's. I have been told by some that he is McCosker's and others that he is Carpenter's.

Can you tell from this picture what kind he is?

That is a McCoskers and a nice one at that.

Carpenters have multiple filaments on the top a McCosker has the single like yours.

Thanks!

Since the top filament is kind of splitting into two parts, I wasn't sure if that was the beginning of more filaments or still considered the one that makes him McCosker's.

The other thing that made me wonder is that he is so aggressive. I'm about to take the juvenile that I hoped he would pair with out of there because he chases it incessantly.

But I do love the color displays! He is a show off and flashes often.

Thanks for the ID.

Attenuate Flasher Wrasse

Attenuate Flasher Wrasse

I got a male, 70mm long, of Paracheilinus attenuatus from Kenya.

It is closely related to P. mccoskeri that is shown above. P. attenuatus has a rhomboid caudal fin and a single narrow filament on dorsal fin inmale form. he it displays the body turns yellowish and stripes on side become brilliant blue (see photo).

It is rarely seen in market and costs some US$90 in Japan.

first of I'd like to say great thread to everyone. Great pictures and beautiful fish.

Now I need a little help from you fairy and flasher wrasse experts.

I have a 50 gallon tank currently with a oc clown, tangaroa goby, and a coral beauty angel.

I am looking to add 3 more fish, all wrasses. What would be a good combination in terms of aggression and space?

I was looking into either a McCocksers or Carpenters for sure. Can 2 different types of flashers get along? Like if I had a McCooskers with a Blue flasher?

I am also interested in getting a solar fairy and or exquisite fairy. How do these sound? Anyone else have good suggestions for semi small peaceful wrasse combinations that are fun to watch? Thanks!

Be sure your tank is covered as they will jump. Egg crate is NOT sufficient.

Flasher wrasses get along just fine. I have five species in each of my tanks. If it were me, I would get all flasher wrasses, ideally a harem or pair.
