Let's see 'em - Before and After pics of Vodka Dosing!

Just spike when first signs of cyano appear in very low nutrient reef tank.

grams KNO3 ~= 5 mg/l target * 3.84 l/ gallon * total gallons * 1000 mg/gram

Might redose when nitrates less than 1 mg/l AND if cyano still present

Ok lets make it easier! :D

My tank is a 65g.

How much (grams) of KNO3 should I mix in 1 gallon of tap watter?

Just a quick question. When dosing vodka, can you still change 10-15% of water every week? or should you wait for nitrates to drop to zero first before doing a water change?

What are your current test levels, before you do anything?

NO3 = 0 (salifert)
PO4 = 0 (elos)

I'm working with vodka + bio digest + AA and I'm happy with the results. But I think that my system would look better if there was some nitrogen in the water. My LPS corals looks pale and sick, SPS doing fine.

I'm always facing some spots of cyano that I do believe its rises from some imbalance between NO3 & PO4. I agree with my NO3 tests, but I don't believe on my PO4 results. So I'm looking forward to try KNO3, but I need to make sure that I will not overdose it.

I don't think you should be using tap water in your tank lol.

Well water with very low phosphate could be OK but not ideal. I would consider a RO/DI unit when you get a chance.

Just add 1 gram potassium nitrate and retest after 24 hours.

I can now confirm cyano is fading without a doubt after 10 days. There is a little left in low flow corners on rocks. I am not against amino acids, it is not a direct cure and I really have no idea it can be taken up in same manner. It is certainly more expensive. I haven't added amino yet.

lol, I don't know why I said tap water, I use a 5 stages RO/DI unit. :)

slow_leak so there is no need to mix it with RO/DI water, just drop it direct in the sump?

tastingSalty I think you need to buy KNO3 at a chemical store.

I'm actually using stump remover for kno3. It's supposed to be 97% pure kno3 and the rest is binding agents and other things. I looked at the composition of the stump remover and kno3 from a chemical supplier and they we're pretty much identical. People have been using stump remover in planted tanks for years, and I have had no problems in the past months i've used it. Just make sure its a good brand of stump remover such as grants or hi-yield. There are others that are equally as pure, but i can't remember the names of them.

Not really. The increase in Potassium would be negligible.

If your looking to increase Potassium use this.

Haha, I'm actually glad that it doesn't raise potassium now. I ordered some Brightwell Aquatics Potassion from premium aquatics, and after reading about this KNO3 cyano remedy in ULNSs, I was hoping that I didn't blow $10.

Thanks!

I know its only been a short while since I started to dose Vodka but look at the results I am getting in such a small time. I am also dosing MB7 at four drops per day and changing 5 gallons of water a week. I am hopping i can start dosing AA again soon but it dose not look like the SPS need it at this time. well here are the before and after pictures let me know what you think and remember its only been a few weeks. My nitrates have gone down below .25 closer to .15 or so and my phosphates are around .01 to .02 I am dosing 1.3 mls of vodka a day for a total volume of water is 100 gallons.
