Let's see 'em - Before and After pics of Vodka Dosing!

If you have no-one to look after the tank you could add Vodka to your top-off reservoir. Then start off on a half dose when you come back and raise to full dose over the course of a week. The bigger the tank the easier to do IMO.

It would have to be a closed vessel because alchol evaporates quickly. And even then you are likely to get growth with a deluted solution.

Really? I have my vodka poured into an open container (so its easier to pull it with the syringe) and I don't have any of it evaporate.

I just started dosing, on day 4. I have seem better skim and some lighting of my cotton candy algae. Here is a recent before pic.

The problem is the alcohol evaporating fast.....but %60 is still water. The alcohol will evap faster then the water leaving more water and less alcohol to drive the bacteria.

I have two questions:

1.) Where are you buying the syringe to measure vodka? (I have one for my salifert test kits but I'd rather not use that, nor do I want to buy another test kit simply for the syringe)

2.) Are any of you guys/gals getting tired of daily vodka dosing? I'm sure I'll be fine with it for a few months, but for how long after that?

1) Pharmacy AKA drug store

2) not yet i look at it as if i am feeding my fish

I dose via brs dosers on controller. I used an empty bottled water with a hole drilled in the top. I dilute it with DI water in a 3:1 ratio and spread the dose out 8 times per day. VERY stable and I never miss a dose.

I have a 375 gallon reef with po4 around .25 and Nitrates, nitrite at zero. Just saw some hair pop up in the tank. What would the amount to put? Is there one brand that is better then aonther?

This sounds like a great idea.

Anyone dose too much? Somehow my tank got double dosed and looks like it has "snot" strings/bubbles for lack of better word. Wondering what to do, all still looks normal except the snot :)

thanks

post is a little old, but you just need to cease dosing when that happens and it should go away after a couple of days. I don't believe it will hurt anything but you could be dangerously close to overdosing and depriving your tank of oxygen (if you haven't already).

EDIT: also make sure your skimmer is working optimally.

I do this as well, I don't dilute it at all though. With my prolifux doser I can set it to dose 1ml 12 times a day.

I remember hearing about a reefer who dosed his sps tank with the "daterape" drug GHB
which is really amino acids. Has anyone heard of this before? I am in no way saying it's OK to use a iilegal substance but if you were to dose I wonder if it would have simaler results?

I think you mean HGH=human growth hormone, it is and has been used in aquaria. Mostly in other countries such as Italy, it is rather expensive in the US not to mention controlled.

No I do mean GHB

Gamma-Hydroxybutyric acid

γ-Hydroxybutyric acid (GHB), also known as 4-hydroxybutanoic acid and sodium oxybate (INN), is a naturally occurring substance found in the human central nervous system, as well as in wine, beef, small citrus fruits, and almost all animals in small amounts.[1] It is also categorized as an illegal drug in many countries.[2] It is currently regulated in Australia and New Zealand, Canada, most of Europe and in the US. GHB as the sodium salt, known as sodium oxybate, is sold by Jazz Pharmaceuticals under the name Xyrem[3] to treat cataplexy[4] and excessive daytime sleepiness in patients with narcolepsy.

GHB has been used in a medical setting as a general anesthetic, to treat conditions such as insomnia, clinical depression, narcolepsy, and alcoholism, and to improve athletic performance.[5] It is also used as an intoxicant (illegally in many jurisdictions) or as a date rape drug.[6] GHB is naturally produced in the human body's cells and is structurally related to the ketone body beta-hydroxybutyrate. As a supplement/drug, it is used most commonly in the form of a salt, for example sodium gamma-hydroxybutyrate (Na.GHB, sodium oxybate, or under the brand name Xyrem.) or potassium gamma-hydroxybutyrate (K.GHB, potassium oxybate). GHB is also produced as a result of fermentation, and so is found in small quantities in some beers and wines. Succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase deficiency is a disease that causes GHB to accumulate in the blood.

This is what I found on google real quick!
I know this is a controlled substance in usa, and many other countries but I have been searching fo rthe article I saw published with this info alsoin regards to marine biology and it's effects.
