this will be for my 640 display

Mine, wanted something different also. Didn't have to worry about sump space since all workings are now in the closet next to the tank.

Chris, you asked me to post a few more pictures of my stand and I decided to go ahead and post on your thread. As I said the stand is constructed of furniture grade yellow pine and is designed with the weight of a 58g reef aquarium in mind. However if an overbuilt stand is what you need for peace of mind then overbuild it. Each of the four posts is made up 2 1x's in the shape of an L with the rear two being an offset L to create a pocket for the panel side doors. on the frame all lengths are biscuit jointed and glued and all butted ends are pocket screwed as seen in this picute. The long front and rear rails under the aquarium are reinforced with another 1x4 screwed and glued parallel to the first.

The side panel doors are constructed of two routed 1x10's running long ways and a 1x4 running the width at the top to mimic the framing and add strength. They are biscuit jointed and glued together and reinforced with a tack nailed 1x2 on the backside at the bottom. The doors are hinged with a continuous hinge on the back and slide into the frame, kinda like disappearing doors. The front doors are made similar to the side only with framing around the routed inserts. Molding was put at the top and bottom with the top having a lip of 3/4 inch. The side molding is tacked on the door panels and opens with the doors.

There are more pictures in my photo album that may be helpful.
I decided to stain the stand in ebony. Here is a picture after two coats but before applying the satin poly clear coat. It has a little bit of an antique look to it, with wood showing through in some places. Another coat would probably get rid of this , but I think I like it as it is.

I also agree with TRwells,

I built a stand for my buddy that is so over built that you can park an M1 Abrahms on it.

SO I made this one for my 90 its made out of 1/4 and 1/6 furniture grade pine and I skinned it with 3/4 mahogany ply to add some extra stability.

I gave it a natural finish with 4 coats of poly oil.

I got mine from a local place with a buddy discount. It was $30 for three 20 foot lengths, and I cut it myself.

msm- are steel stands stronger than those moster sized 2x4 stands everyone builds? I would assume they are lighter also, right?

so who makes these? are they only DIY? What type of steel is used? Do you just screw the outside covering into the steel tubes? I would like more info, where could I find someone who makes these and are also knowledgable to bring me up to speed?

You can make them as strong as a wood stand while using less material, and like hurleycr said, that gives you more room. Mine weighs maybe 20 pounds.

I welded mine myself, but you can probably find a local welder to do yours. I attached the wood skins with straps.

Here is a picture of the stand and canopy I made for my 120. Click my "red house" to see more pictures and the entire build thread.

I posted pics on the page one of this thread. I have more, but those pretty much show what's going on.
