Okay, Theres a thread down the way with folks talking about having no problems using tapwater only in their reef tank.

Lets see em!!!

I live in an area that enters some "american tap water purity " contest...thingy, every year...and we are always in the top 10 cities of excellent quality tapwater.
I used it for my fish only SW tank for 8 years and started my reef with it. I switched to RO/DI about 8 mo. ago and never looked back. EVERYTHING is so much healthier now.

For all of you that say the method your using is working, pictures are the only way to brag here!:D :D :smokin:

I upgraded to this 75 gallon in October. I used about 60 gallons of tap water and 30 gallons (includes sump volume) of my old 55 gallon water (also tap). I topped off and did water changes with tap water until about mid-December. Never in 2 years have I had a serious algae problem. When I had my 55 setup, I had a diatom bloom that lasted for only a few days. The only reason I am now using bottled store bought water is because I noticed as the weather got colder here, my water smelled more and more like chlorine. I would say that about at least 50% of the current tank volume is still tap water.

This photo was taken in January, and my tank has grown tremendously since then, including several frags of SPS coral.

Here is your proof bud:

I know some one has always used tap water for his tank. They look fine, of course more maintenance required and what he has would be better if he uses RO I would guess.

This is tank is going on its third year. Lots of algae compared to a lot of tanks I see on here. Not hair algae, but teh fine blade red stuff on the rocks. (not cyano) SPS guys would not like my tank. But I have good coral growth and decent color.

This pic was taken before I repalced the old ushio 10k bulbs. No actinic either. I have put Reeflux 12k bulbs on and things are mo betta.

This tank was up for 6 years with great results. We moved and I took it down.

Here's proof in the pudding, same tank at a later date. I started it on May 04/04 this pic was taken on Sept 09/04. Less than 4 mos. Notice the growth on the finger leather at the top. Had a Hydnophora Horn Coral that was given to me almost dead, it tripled in size in as much time. Check 'em out in my gallery. Please don;t call the Tang Police,,, as this was a temporary setup while in transition to a 210 AGA. In fact the Yellow took out the Sailfin weeks later. I had to learn the hard way. NOW I KNOW !!!

When talk about RO/DI, it's 0 or close to 0 DTS that people have in mind. But when talk TAP it could vary anywhere from 50 to 400 DTS depends on the source of tap. In short, successful story of one could be different from the other just because of this.

Here is our tank it was a 55 on tap now it is a 75. Just switched to RO/DI water about 1 month ago so maybe 20 percent is RO/DI. We only do water changes maybe once a month and we also run one of the dreaded cannister filters that everyone says will cause algae.
