Let's Talk About Water Movement in an SPS Tank.

HELP

If my new sps tank is 175G should i be aiming for a flow of approx 25x that???

Yep.

For you... one Tunze 6200 Stream on pulse or better 2 - 6100 Streams with Controller.

IMO and IME, you want to shoot for 20x-50x turnover for an sps tank.

That number get's harder to maintain the more and larger you corals get. That's why I think it's just as, if not more, important to make sure all your corals are getting good flow rather than just trying to hit a specific turnover number.

Easy simple flow.

Easy simple flow.

I am sure that there are others out there are using SCWDs in the their tanks to create flow but most seem to be used in closed loop external systems. In my main reef tank, a 135gal, I have a pair of Turbelles on a controller. In addition, my return from my sump goes to a pair of SCWDs lying horizontal just below the surface. This combination creates random and at times whirlpool like turbulence. The SCWDs are hardly visible and out of the way. Now, that technique is pretty straight forward, what I did for instant flow in my newly set up 65 gal sps tank is both very effective and simple, thats what my physics prof used call an elegant solution. I have a Mag 7 mounted with a split T output going to two separate SCWDs. This only requires 14" of PVC, two elbows and a T fitting. The flow is naturally alternating, at different rates and directions, and easy to hide behind the rock work. I paid about 700$ for my Turbelle system, this little unit costs about 120$, and simple is good.

Nice thread. I kept a Wave2K for several months- the water movement was wonderful. At the end of that time it broke. What's this about the belt being fixed? Any long term experience?

the mechanism takes a beating doing what it does. But it sure moves water well.

Just give Mike R a call, depending how old your unit is,there is new belt system.and a even newer one being released soon.

OK, One more quick flow question
just 1 6060 tunze stream $127.03? or

2 of the Seios. $149.99
http://www.marinedepot.com/md_viewItem.asp?idproduct=TA3717

Which would be the best option?

with the seios i would have a flow rate of appox. 3830
with the 1 tunze i would have a flow of appox. 2430

Any input, or possibly new suggestions would be apprecitated.
Also, which setup would be more obstuctive?

I have toyed around with the idea of a closed loop with 900 coming from each of 3 nozzles (loc-line) however, the cost would be increased a more than i would like.

Tank info is in the little info place

I own 2-6100's and I really like them. I bet the Seios are nice, but how reliable are they? I will NEVER own Rio products again. To me water flow is essential and after loosing a few too many corals to Rio failures the extra money is more than worth the peice of mind. The Tunze's are also programmable opening up a whole nother realm of water flow options. Like I said I do not own Seio's but I have "heard" that people are having problems within months with them. Are you saving money if you have to replace them within a year because they locked up or a coral died because there was no flow? Just my 2 cents. It sucks that I had to sell one of my Kidneys to buy the Tunze's though. :(

FWIW, some talk about the way the Seios tend to lock up, but I have the same problem with my Stream. I even keep my Ca level pretty low by SPS standards (350), but anytime I cut the power to the Stream, it locks up and refuses to restart until I take it apart and clean it up. The magnet always has a buildup on it. I don't know if it has to do with how much water they move or what. Not sure if this is a problem for others or if I just have a lemon, but I've never had such a problem with any other pump. It's going on 2 years old, but for the cash, it should be able to go more than a month without needing to be "cleaned".

Just to toss out somthing I read along the way.....I would check your magnesium levels. When mg is low you tend to get build up on heaters and pumps as Calcium precipitates. Check out some of Randy Holmes- Farley articals in the cheistry Forum

Mg is a rock solid 1300.
Thanks, though :)

I don't have this problem with any other pumps in the system (Gen-X, Sequence and Maxi-Jet).

I had the exact same problem with my 6100's. No problems with any other pumps in the system, but the Tunze seemed to keep getting stuck. It originally started when I would hit the "feed" option and they wouldn't start up again without me manually spinning the prop first (unplugged of course). Shortly after, the pumps would randomly stop (with that awful alarm going off) at just random times. Again, I would have to manually spin the prop. I've taken them apart many times for cleaning (48 hour soak in vinegar solution as per instructions), but no joy. There was no real calcium buildup either.

This all started happening after about 3 months of use. So, I contacted our distributor and he replaced them with new. I have heaps of friends that have them as well with no problems, so am I hoping that I just got a bad batch and won't have to worry about it any longer.

I have ran streams for years and only had one stop once after not cleaning it for about a year & a 1/2. Cleaned it and is still running two years later. I also run my Ca and Alk high to keep up with my SPS.

need help with flow ideas

need help with flow ideas

Hey I am running a 210 (72 x24 x29)with hammerhead squence putting about 1200-1800gph, 2-6000 streams and 6080 stream. The tank is an island tank with the overflows on one side. I am getting a build up of junk on the opposite side of the tank. No matter how high everthing is set for flow on that side it won't move enough water to get rid of it. I was thinking of ditching the 6080 and getting 2 6100 and a couple of penductors. If any one has any ideas or suggestions please PM me. Thanks

How come you only get 1200-1800 out of a Hammerhead? Is it two stories underneath the tank plumbed with 3/4 line?:p

My hammerhead pump is also running my skimmer It has 3 1" outlets. Most of the flow is going to the tank. However about 800-1000 is used for the skimmer. That help you out some.

The tank has 3 1" outlets, two to the tank (1200-1800) and one to the ETSS 600 pro (800-1000 gph). When I think about it I wish I had gone with an Iwaki 70RLT and a 55RLT but money was an issue at the time when I set it up. I know middleton Mark uses the penductors. Does anyone have anyelse have any experience with them? Any Pros/Cons to them other than being "big and ulgy"
