Lighting II

I have a freind that has a corcea clam in a 55g with 220watts of blue and white atinic flour. I talked him to at least adding another 2 power compacts @96watt each which would give 412watts total= enough? He won't go MH. Is his clam going to bleach? Thanks

You neverknow, sometimes some people can pull off a maxima or crocea with PCs. But, every one I've personally known has had theclam die between 6-12 months. Have him put the clam as high up as possible and keep chemistry stable. He might get lucky.

I can never understand why some people insist on trying to take the scenic route, instead of going straight downtown. A canopy full of fluoresent tubes that ends up being mediocor, or a couple of MH's giving you the freedom to grow just about anything without worries. The answer is just too easy to overlook.

i might copy and past that for later use:D

I'm worried about heat. Maybe you guys can help me out.

Tank is a 55 tall (36x15x24) and with a DSB of 4 I'm left with 20" height. Have a canopy that gives me enough space to put in a 7" fixture with about 1" space between the fixture glass and the acrylic cover. The space between the acrylic cover and water is another 1".

If I put in a 32" long and 7" high fixture with 2x150 MH + 2x65 PC. Would this be enough for clams? I could also make a mound of sand or rocks to raise the clam higher. How about if the MH are 2x70 instead of 2x150? How much do temperature increase are we talking about? I live in cold SF and the tank is in the ground floor where the room temperatue is usually 70 and will only get to 74 for a few days of the year. I also have a 29 gallon sump that normally has about 15 gallons of water on a 5" DSB.

Sorry for the multiple postings with too many questions. I'm trying to re-arrange me livestocks between tanks to match the lights.

How about this one? On my 20 gallon with 2x40 PC I can replace the fixture to 3x36 PC or 6x36 PC. Would this work? I can't use MH on this tank. The distance from the sand to the light is 12". Of course I could also do a mound of sand or rocks to raise the clams.

Gussy, the 2x150 would be great, but no less. the 70w wouldn't penetrate enough. But, I'd have to say, from personal experience and witnessing others lose clams, a firm no on the 20g. With a couple of 65w bulbs you could maybe keep a squamosa, but even when I had 2x65 over a 15gallon short my squamosa wasn't happy seeming. I threw a 175w MH bulb over it instead and he was "happy as a clam" and grew a ton with great color until I upgraded. Throw a 150w pendant over your 20 and you could keep any clam you wanted, light speaking :)

Thanks...I think I'll just put the clam on the 55 gallon as I'm going to get the MH + VHO/PC on it. I tried to put a 175MH + 2T5 on the 20 and it looks really bad.
