Water change question

Water change question

Recd a question about how the water change works:

Re: A ?? About your water changes

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In my 125g tank, when I do a water change, I siphon water out of my DT down to a certin level and then use a pump to pump the new water into my DT. But with you tank and your big rubbermaid container, I am guessing you do it diferent than I do. Do you take your old water out of your tank from the rubbermaid container and then add the new water back into your system the same way? I am just wondering how water changes are done in large tanks such as yours.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Answer:

There is nothing in the 100G Rubbermaid sump except live rock and a deep sand bed (no fish or "intentional" inverts). I start water changes by turning off the DT return pump. I open a valve located near the base of the Rubbermaid, and approximately 50G of water starts to drain to a sewer cleanout located outside the equipment room. When that water is almost drained I start the DT return pump which then pumps water from the overflow back into the Rubbermaid. At the same time I start the pump on my water holding tank, which pumps water back into the sump.
I continue pumping until the water reached the proper level in Sump#1, which indicates I have replaced exactly the same amount of water that has drained. I close all vales and I am done. Elapsed time: about 7 minutes.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A bonus to draining water from the Rubbermaid, I get slight turbulence a cross the surface of the DSB, which rises as a skim on the surface. All this is drained off with the weekly water change.

While it is a "dry hands" water change, I do get plenty of salt water therapy on my hands with changing the (5) filter socks twice a week. ;)

Re: Don Corelone...

Re: Don Corelone...

It's amazing to see how he has grown, he was under three inches when I originally got him.

The "Don" arrived!
Don01.jpg

He was coaxed out of hiding by the offer of a whole table shrimp! He was acclimated to our water slowly - cup by cup for about 30 minutes:

He passed the obligatory cat inspection test:

And into the tank he went with a splash that was heard around the room!

At first he looked a little miffed, but asserted himself in the tank and explored his new digs...

Just how big is "the Don"? Here he is swimming in our 8 foot wide tank:

Yeah, he's pan-size! :D

He went through a sheet of Nori like it was a snack...(because it was).
We are looking forward to our fish friend. When he outgrows our tank, we will donate him to the Oklahoma Aquarium... http://www.okaquarium.org/

Wow! I didn't know he started his aquarium life with the Davis'... let's just say he's showing our other fish how to eat! ;)

T5 Configuration

T5 Configuration

Someone PM'd about the T5 bulbs that we use over the display tank. That info is buried somewhere deep in the the bowels of part I of the thread, so I dug it up from my word processor to post again.

These lights were suggested by GrimReefer over on the RC T5 Q&A thread. We have twelve rows of T5 bulbs, with two 54W bulbs per row. Here is the bulb selection:

Row # FRONT
1. ATI Blue Plus
2. UVL 75-25
3. ATI Blue Plus
4. GE 6500K
5. KZ Fiji Purple
6. ATI Blue Plus
R2 Signature Series Moonlight
7. GE 6500K
8. ATI Blue Plus
9. UVL Actinic White
10. ATI Blue Plus
11. UVL 75-25
12. ATI Blue Plus
BACK

So far, the SPS that survived the 180G ALK debacle seem to be responding happily to the new lighting. I am seeing good growth in our acros, millis and montis.

We hope to see even more results when the CA Reactor is up and running...

Great Thread! Great Work! Great Tank!

I am to the serious stage of planning my own Large Reef Tank endeavor. I am using this and other RC threads for ideas, information and suggestions.

In my first pass through RC over the last few months, I did not realize the number of OKC area folks; I am definately interested in COMAS and meeting more local folks.

Again, Great job!

Welcome!

Welcome!

Welcome to the thread, Shane. Please come back often and ask any questions you might have...

While this is a large project, it's probably not in the top ten largest (personal) tanks in the OKC area. There are some really big ones around...

Hope to see you at a COMAS meeting when there is an early OU game. :D

That is sooo COOL!
I agree with you, Tebow is the man!

Maybe we can go to a game sometime, Gainesville is only 1-1/2 hrs. southwest from here...

Did you ever go to Ginnie Springs??

Unfortunately, Gainesville is about 20 hours southeast from here... :D

I will never admit going to Ginnie Springs! (the State Park, of course)

Oh, I think the Statute of Limitations has expired...

Have you ever heard of " what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas?"
Well, that goes for Ginnie Springs too!

You would not EVEN believe how much Ginnie Springs has changed, they now have over 100 water/electrical camp sites, they have been able to preserve a natural look.

Ginnie is one of our favorite places to camp....

BTW, Ginnie Springs is a private camp ground, not a state park, so drinking is legal......

check their web site out.

I thought back in the day, there was a small State Park there...like in the mid-late 60's? I'm probably wrong... first time (today). ;)

Updates

Updates

Recd the second pH probe for the CA reactor. I am away from the house today attending a settlement conference so will probably just wait until the weekend to get the Life Reef LRC-2 plumbed in.

In addition, I resurrected an old Aqua UV 25W sterilizer from our koi pond days. I verified that the ballast still works and ordered a new 25W bulb, which should arrive on Friday. I will plumb the UV filter to the outflow of the frag tank. That way I should have the proper flow going through the filter without adding another pump.

Other than that, not much going on... ;)

Lightsluvr - I love your tank. I'm hoping to start up a ~175gallon (50" x 32" x 25") A.G.E. reef tank sometime after the first of the year. Eventually (after the tank is established) I would like to have a 6-line and a mandarin dragonette in the tank... two of my favorite fish. I plan to have a 30-40 gallon refugium primarily for the purpose of pods. Still, I have concerns if a 6-line will wipe out the pod population and not leave enough for the mandarin. I have also read that six-lines can be aggressive towards mandarins. I was about to resign to that idea until I saw that you had one of each of these in your 125 gallon. How long did you have a 6-line and a mandarin in that tank? Did you "target feed" your mandarin or was he able to live off of your pod population?

I'm just trying to get an idea. I know I can't bank on the idea that a mandarin will eat prepared foods. While I would certainly try to feed a mandarin daily with a "mandarin diner" I want a system in which a mandarin can still thrive in case it refuses prepared foods. I guess I'm hoping to hear that your mandarin was in the 125 gallon tank for at least a year, with a full belly, and showed some signs of growth during that period on a pod only diet. Is that asking too much:lol:I figure if they were doing well in your 125 they should do well in my 175 (probably more like 240 gallon with refugium and sump) staocked full of LR.

I'm sure you'll have plenty of pods for a mandarin pair + 6-line in your new tank. :eek1:

George, your tread is always informative. I'm very interested your test kit experiences and how you come out on it. I appreciate your frequent updates and wanted to keep the test kit issue on the radar. I've visited your web cam several times, cool gadget. BTW that Valmingi is awesome.
