Lightsluvr's 340G Upgrade

Your attention to detail is commendable. I love your setup, nicely done.

Thanks, Mark.

If I hadn't been able to do a through the wall, your peninsula type tank would have been my choice. You've done a great job.

Kitty pix are almost guaranteed. They're everywhere in the LL household... in fact there's one grooming himself on my desk even as I type... :worried:

Weekly water change...

Weekly water change...

Completed weekly 60G water change in about 7 minutes...have figured a way to get a full 60G out of the Rubbermaid sump. First I shut the valve which allows water to flow from the sump back to the return pump chamber. That causes the Rubbermaid to start to "back up" while lowering the water level in the return chamber of the main sump. When the water reaches within an inch of the top of the Rubbermaid, I know that I have 60G available that I can empty to the sewer drain. I turn off the return pump and drain the Rubbermaid down to within an inch of the top of the DSB. I turn on the pump which then pumps 60G of new SW into the Rubbermaid. At the same time, I turn on the system return pump which starts to circulate the water, mixing old saltwater with the new. Very minimal impact of the occupants of the display tank...

Measurements this afternoon after the water change:

dKH - 9.9
CA - 400
MG - 1350
PO4 - 0

7 minutes is quick, but it sounds like a busy time.

The readings are great. Wish my home conditioning unit was so accurate. I'd enjoy life a lot more.

Did you learn all that when you were taking the nite courses on your CA Reactor at Melevsreef.com ?? lol

I learned all that I know about the Life Reef CA reactor from Jeff at Life Reef and Melev - no doubt about it...

I learned all I know about the water change "dry hands" system from GlassReef and EdandSandy's large tank build threads... I just modified their brilliant systems to fit my physical layout.

I haven't missed a water change yet, because it is so quick and easy...

It takes more time to change out five filter socks every 2-3 days than it does to do a 60G water change... :bounce3:

How many do you have? Are they all Siamese? The most I had at once was four. Now I have one and umm seven Chihuahuas!

We have four of our own, plus we are fostering four for a local non-kill shelter... they are all inside cats... six automatic litter boxes. House always smells freah and clean (actually it smells like the ocean, thanks to the aquariums...)

Here is a link to the page where I described construction of the light rack.

The retro kits all came from ReekGeek.com:

If the first link sends you to RC archives, just click on the link on page one of this thread. The link on page 1 will take you back to Part I of my build thread (this is part II), and then just navigate to page 7 for a complete, detailed description of the light rack, track system, etc. All the links for parts sources are in there.

Thanks for stopping by the thread. We hope you'll subscribe and come back often. I'll be glad to answer any questions you might have.

We're learning that setting up the tank was easy; the challenge is to keep it going...there seems to be constant challenges, no matter how diligent I try to be...

thanks i did read through this but im reading alot of DIY threads and i totally forgot
im archiving alot of pics rails rollers square tubing measurments the works! so that when im able to finance this build im doing it right 1st time:thumbsup:

I'm sure your LED moonlights give you some shimmer at night. Is that correct? How about during the day? Have you ever run the LEDs with the T5s on to see if they give you any shimmer?

I'd like to go with a T5 fixture, but I'm thinking about incorporating some 3W LEDs just to get a shimmer effect. Wondering how many (or few) is necessary to do that.

The moonlight LED's are low intensity. They do add remarkable shimmer when they are the only lights on in the tank... however, their impact is lost when the actinics and other T5's are lighted...

One of these days I'll put my camera on a tripod and take a photo of the moonlights...

When I had a 180G tank, there were 6 white and 6 blue LED's that lighted it at night quite nicely...

I love moonlights on our tanks - they make great "night lights" for the room...

Thanks for stopping by...come back often.
