Lithophyllon undulatum

no_name.jpg

I've had this coral for several months now although I didn't properly ID it until recently.

Very nice coral, I have seen this in person. The industry has them around, just seems like they tend to be wild caught mostly. I have seen a few "frags" offerd from reputable online sources though. I often wonder if they are cultured or simply chopped up wild pieces which do not always do well in captivity. I have a wild electric green specimine that is roughly 1 year old and it is growing slowly. Nice peice Gary (coral that is) LMAO.

Nice Gary. Where did you get that one? I have a piece that color that's probably 15" across in my 120. I've got a couple other colors as well.

The green one I have I brought with me to MACNA this year, and Julian Sprung identified it as Podabacia sp. There was some debate between Jake Adams and Julian. Jake thought it was Lithophyllon.

now it's MY turn to say huh, interesting!

I got this one from TRS early this year. I'd never seen anything like it and at first glance I thought it was some kind of weird Pavona.
Apparently it's an easily misidentified coral although it has some distinctive identifying features. (Some big name coral guys failed to help me identify mine!)

And here I was still believing that I never attempted a Fungiid. Silly me.

One nice thing about this Litho: although it's a comparitively slow grower it ROLLS over purple cap. Kewl :bum:

A debate between Julian Sprung and Jake adams would be interesting to witness. If these guys weren't 100% on ID, what could we know. The ID game is a tricky one when it comes to corals.

Hey G.
It was a cool experience. Julian and Charles Delbeek were also talking about some of my corals. They were taking pictures, and we went through a few of the corals, debating on the identification. There were some other big name guys joining in on the conversations, including Randy Donowitz and an Australian diver. Can't remember his name. We called it "The meeting of the minds".

I wish I had taken a picture of the debate. It was the highlight of MACNA for me.

Julian purchased a nice Goniastrea from me afterwards.

I dunno....

I dunno....

about four or five months?
It was shaded by a big Montipora up until two weeks ago.

Also:
I'm now unsure whether or not this is actually L. undulatum or L. edwardsii

5" diameter right now. Located low in aquarium. Semi shade.
I'm still interested in obtaining Podabacia species or Lithophyllon of different colors but they're not common in the trade.
