Hey guys,

I just bought a biocube off craigslist and it came with a lot of liverock but I am not sure if the stuff that's growing on it is good Or horrible! Somebody, please help me.

This is the first growth (yellow squishy stuff)

This is the second. Hard sticks that have like little worms in them. I broke some and saw some live things in them. And they are all over the rocks

How do I kill the vermetid snails?

Those look more like mini feather dusters to me. Do you ever see little "fans" coming out of the end of the tube? If so, they are filter feeders and a good thing. Vermetid snails in themselves are not bad, but can multiply rapidly and cover other stuff you like in the tank.

No those are vermitid snails.... Usually I just crush them with a fingernail or something similar.

how do i stop them from reproducing? I will try my best to squeeze all of them, but there is a lot!! and what about the "sponges". Should I rip those off the rock?

It's ok. The ocean is full of things that live very well with fish and corals. The more the merrier. The only thing I'd cry halt on is any wisp of algae other than hair algae, which is just kind of normal and easy to deal with.

I'm curious what makes them so bad?

Vermetid snails cast nets of mucous to reel in small bits of food. If there's a ton of them in a tank, they can interfere with coral feeding, make a mess with the mucousal nets, and generally be a PITA. But they're not that big of a deal - a rogue mantis shrimp or an aiptasia infestation can be a much more difficult problem.
