i agree the tank looks great and the picsa are good. of course i can't take good pics either with my camera. anyone know much about the olympus c-720 camera? or ways i can get decent pics out of it?

melev - yeah i hate that algea..but i'm not sure it is hair. it looks kind of like a fern when it grow out...any ID's??

Could be bryopsis if it is slightly fern-like and coarse to the touch. Try blowing it off with a turkey baster to rob it of its food source.

i don't think it is bryopsis..but i'll look for some ids.

it is very fine IMO. not stiff or coarse i don't think

Lunch, looks like byropsis or derbesia to me. You need to keep on top of it. Pull out every bit of it you can. Then scrub the entire area really good with a toothbrush and then blast it well with a turkey baster. Keep doing this weekly until it doesn't come back. It may take a couple months but you will beat it. The worst thing you can do is just sit back and live with it. I would think it will eventually spread and just end up becoming harder to deal with when you finally decide to do something about it.

those pics don't even look like it. it isn't that short and stubby..that is after prunning. it will get 3" long if i let it go. and will have a stem w/ "blades runnign out one side of it. doesn't look like the picks of byropsis from teh pics i've seen. not sure what derbesia is though. i'll have to look later. Travis where do you get your ID's for algae??

well after watching my tang and my clams for a couple days i'm sad to report that my clams are NOT happy. they don't open up like they used to at all. the tang is a constant picker on teh rock, glass, etc. and he picks at thier shells and it ****es the clams off. i 'm gonna have to get rid of the clams or the tang...and i told my wife that the clams would go if another yellow eye kole tank picked at my clams...my old one did and i removed him when i moved tanks

i have heard that this isn't common w/ yellow eyes...picking on clams isn't. i'm sure he is jut trying to clean them off but he ****es them off SOOOO much.

not sure what to do now..get rid of the fish or the clams?? and if i get rid of the clams not sure where to get rid of them...not sure if my LFS will take them

That sucks man. I remember reading about the first kole you had that you got rid of.

Personally, I'd get rid of the Kole. You've had those clams for a long time. But the Kole really is a COOL fish!

yeah it sucks. i like the clams but the kole tang is sooo cool!

whatever i do i need to do it quick i guess.

either that or i'll be making an eggcrate box for the clams to have some protection

If you had a well lighted prop section, you could move the clams to that and allow them to filter your water naturally. I remember someone like Steve Tyree talking about setting up a clam zone to filter the water naturally. Sounded expensive, but really neat.

For my algae id's I use google.

How about taking your clams out and scrubbing them off so there is nothing for the tang to pick at? Your clams may also just need to get used to having their shells picked at. They are used to not having anything bother them so any new threat will cause them to remain in a cautious state, not opening completely. Once they get used to it, they may open back up like they used to. When I kept clams in my reef tank I had tangs that would pick at the algae on their shells and it never bothered them one bit.

melev - yeah that is an idea...but w/ my set up not possible would be like Travis's clam tank that he used to have. i know clams do some filtering...and they are amazing looking

i took one out so there was no algae on it. the tang just constantly scrapes all teh rock and glass even though it doesn't have visable algae. they are film algae feeders mainly...they have different mouths then most tangs...not sure if you've seen a yellow eye kole before closely. i too thought that it might just take some time to get used to...but i'm not sure how long. i keep watching the tang and he doesn't nip at the flesh or purposly go after the mantle. he just scrapes thier shells or swims by and the retract more. so it might be a cautiouse state type thing. hope they figure it out soon. they won't open all the way even when he is not by them
