Ok just something for you to think about. I just was puzzled why all my Cyno when away so quickly without me doing any thing to the tank .
I had about 40 large turbos Snails they slowly die in about six months time , some of them i got out of the tank some of them die and fell in the back of the rocks so i was not able to get them .
When i open the center of my reef for clean up the amount of the dead snails under the rocks shock me .
I have about 250 Gallon of total system not as big as your but enough water to dilute issues.
I think i find the source of my cyno /PO4, Snail die off.
 
That is definitely an interesting hypothesis. I've lost a lot of snails as well, but mainly Astreas, which aren't that large.

didn't notice any snail die that i know of but they are sneaky buggers and die at the drop of a hat also...so could be.

i'm wondering if it isn't my DIY food. i added some cyclopeeze to it and wonder if that is why i'm getting higher then i anticipated. i'm gonna remake some homemade food and keep they cyclopeeze out.

melev i plan on feeding the tank meat 1 day and nori for the tang the other day so i he will eat at least 1x/day. also he can pick away on my rocks for algae and bryopsis...maybe i could teach him to eat it :rolleye1: riiiiighhht.:rolleye1:

i just changed my po4 media last night to 5tbs or Rowa and 5tbs of Phosban. i'll ahve to take my po4 reading in a week or so and see what happens.

oh i didn't siphon the sand last week when i did a water change so it hadn't been siphoned in 2wks at that point...could be it also?

well my poccilopora decided to polyp bail out on my the 1st night :( anyone know if the colony will live after it bails all it polyps? i know the polyps can grow a colony but can the mother colony live and regrow polyps and stuff? i know it was polyp bail out because it is common w/ pocciloporas and there were big whit holes only where the polyps were. :(

Lunch, that doesn't sound like polyp bail out. When polyp bail out happens, you won't even notice it. The colony will release only 1-2 polyps at a time and so you will not notice a couple polyps missing out of hundreds or thousands. That is how it has happened for me anyways. This is also what I heard at a coral propagation lecture at IMAC. You can take your pocci colony out each night and put it in a bowl. Some nights it will bail out a polyp or 2 and some nights it won't. You can then collect the polyps and grow them out. After a while, you will begin to see a schedule on what days and at what times the colony will bail polyps out. Some can do it several times and month and some only once a month, but it is usally just 1 or 2 polyps at a time.
 
jay24k - didn't know if there would be excess in there causing me to be feeding more then i am thinking i was. if that makes any sense

Travis - i stand corrected. well if that isn't the case i wonder why ALL the polyps but about 3 are gone? hope it makes a come back.

guess i need to get tougher on the po4 thingy. could have been one test at that time too. would like to check against your meter Travis. also i need to get a Hanna PO4-19 test kit. supposed to be a real nice test kit for PO4..these salifert ones just don't do it :(

Perhaps you had a fish chewing on that coral. My Six Line has been hitting the pink Pocillopora in my tank. I've watched it happen.
 
Could be excess sure, but if I recall, CP is a really low phosphate food and mainly protein.

How's the bryoposis doing?
 
jay - did i ever mention i HATE bryopsis :( it is not super great. i thought i had a handle on it...now i'm not sure

Does the pocci still have tissue where the polyps bailed? I suppose it could have been a mass bailout induced by the stress of transport and acclimating to a new environment. Any chance we could get a pic of it?

As you know, I despise bryopsis just as much as you. Back in July, I plumbed my 75 into the main system and turned it into a frag tank with a couple 400w 20k's. There are about 150 frags in there and everything was becoming overrun with bryopsis. I finally got a yellow and a kole tang from Grant. They didn't seem to touch the bryopsis at all until last weekend. I was gone all weekend and came home and the frag tank was free of bryopsis as though it had never been there in the first place. I couldn't believe it. Not sure if it was the kole or the yellow, but I'm leaning more towards the kole as Grant said he saw it picking at bryopsis at his place.

If you keep your yellow tang "hungry" it may eat some of your bryopsis before it starts getting accustomed to your prepared foods. FWIW, I've had the yellow in there for a couple months and the kole for a couple weeks. I've never added any food to that tank yet. But I will have to soon as they have almost erradicated all of the algae growing in there.
 
Travis - there is NO tissue where the polyps where. that is why i thought it might have been a mass bail out. just a white spot in the skeleton where the polyp was. there was tissue on the rest of the coral...it didn't look super happy but there was tissue there. there are some polyps on the top branches now that they are open more. i was wondering if it was the stress from stransporting and acclimating.

yeah i know you hate bryopsis too but i thought your main tank was in check? you have such a nice algae free tank...prolly due to all your tangs and low po4 levels.

CONGRATS!! all gone after 1 weekend. lucky you. Grant said my yellow tang was picking at bryopsis in his system too. and i think i have seen him nip at it. i've been feeding him about 1-2"x1" of nori a day. leave it in there for 3hrs and after that (lights out) i take the uneaten portion out so it doesn't foul the water. i want to keep him fed this first couple weeks and then i might leave it out till everyother day to see if he will eat the bryopsis....i can hope

i had a yellow eye and he would nip at the algae but it seemed like he didn't have the "right parts" to rip it off. seemed like he would rasp it but couldn't do much damage. i guess there has been more of it since i took him out....might have done it some good. hope the yellow does some damage!

any pics of your frag tank? i haven't seen it yet

I don't have any pics of the frag tank and my camera is pretty much broken. I'm getting a red x on your pic.
 
Pic is working now. It does look like a mass bail out. Most likely stress induced or also there is a possibility that the polyps were eaten by something in the tank.
 
well i see little polyps growing back in the holes now. thought i was crazy but i did a tripple take and yeppers there are more polyps in there now. mostly small and clearish but they are growing.

the green color is coming back in the polyps and the coral too

hmm..i should do some searching on polyp bail out and see how long till they are back to normal
