Macro algae and LEDs

im planning on using a DIY 25 bulb LED fixture over my fuge here shortly going LED so i can put a frag rack down there and get growth and get it outta the display

No, LED spotlights can be bought as Par38 and 30 lamps which screw into regular sockets. They work great and are quite affordable.

A quick update - my seagrasses are doing great with the AI sol white fixture. There is MARKEDLY decreased nuisance algae growth on the seagrasses and in the tank overall. Because of this, the seagrasses are growing taller than before without having algae accumulate on them and killing them off. I'm excited to see how this progresses and if all goes well may try planting some more species. The caulerpa growth initially slowed down quite a bit and I even had some die off but it has bounced back now. So far I LOVE this light. It is noticeably cooler and more comfortable when I sit at my desk as well.

I use a rapidled par 38 over my fuge. It's been over it for about a month now. My dragons tongue has been blowing up. The light is concentrated so algae does not grow all over the sump because of the light spill. Chaeto keeps going to a corner out of the light and isnt doing great but is still green. Red bubble algae is doing well where it is shaded and getting light. I also have a bunch of shrooms, zoos and palys that are doing well. Colors are ok. I have the old style bulb. I had the bulb laying around from a nano I took down so I figured I'd see how it worked on the fuge.

i realize this is late, but i have a single 50/50 reefbrite on my fuge. its doing its job great so far. its a new tank and all i have is some diatoms. the fuge is working great with it its got all kinds of nasty stuff in it. i think im going to add another as the cheato grows just to have more spread. oh yes and i have 3 120w evolutions on my 180 and 2 on my 75 with no complaints

This i did on a small scale, but I made my own little led light using around 35 of the small 3mm leds - about 1/2 red leds, 1/4 blue, and 1/4 white. I set it on top of my HOB filter that i grow chaeto in and it grows very quickly. The overall color of the fixture is sort of a dark pink.

This thing i wanted to bring up is the red leds - red is often used in terrestrial plant led grow lights, and has been working well for me. The macro at least doubles every week.

These are the cheap kind bought from China.

Read this and didn't get answers I was hoping for lol.
Planning a 12" cube macro tank. PAR30 bulb... good?

Yeah, created this thread in hopes of getting help and didn't really get the answers I was hoping for. Appears that there is no real macro algae expert on the forum that knows much about LEDs. Sticking with CF grow bulbs or power compacts until I hear someone with factual info or someone who real world experience. Wouldn't be hard to create an experiment, but would take time and a little bit of funding.

Sorry... I just saw this. Call me crazy, but I have 6 CREE LED's over my sump with 40 degree optics. Just using cheato, but it grows like CRAZY!

Lol, how long have you been running them? Couple months, couple weeks? Any change in the color of chaeto? Growing any other macros?

I've had it since about November. At the time I was in the planning phase of building an led fixture for the display tank. I was scared and I wanted to practice on a smaller project before ponying up the money for the big fixture.

Honestly, I think the cheato strands are a little thicker, but I can't say for sure. I've got 3 white and three blues in there currently, but my plan is to swap out the blue for white. Maybe I'll order warm white instead of the cool whites that are in there now....

There is one other kind of macro in there, but I don't know what it's called. It was growing on the rocks of my display. It has runners that shoot out roots to hold on. Then every so often it puts up a "stem" with a "disk" on the end.

I'm all LED here. I have LED on my display and my fuge. My fuge is a 50g rubbermaid stock tank, I have one of the home depot par38 style cheap-o lights over it and it does just fine over a 2'x2' area. I'm sure a second one wouldnt hurt but one has done fine for over a year and half now.

Just changed out 3x18watt pc's for 3x12watt panorama led modules and all of my calurpa and hair algae and bubble algae have perished within three weeks maybe too heavy on the blue is all I can think of all else is the same except for the lights.

I was reading over all your posts and was happy to find the this thread. I am in the market for a 37 gallon starter kit and came across the Marineland 37 gallon kit for 150. I was hoping it would be able to sustain saehorse safe macroalgea, but it sounds as though I might be asking too much. Looking over your posts I can see that there has been several people discussing LEDs vs Flouresants..... with that said if I purchase this kit....

What would be a suitable hood that I could use that meet the demands of some of the easier to care for macroalgea?

I could really use someones help so that I select a hood/light setup that can also be dimmed. I dont trust the LFS help as they do not carry any marine livestock or plants.

honestly marineland leds even the reef cap. fixture wont grow much at all( i have not personal first hand experience with them though).
i have not seen any smaller adjustable led fixtures. for just growing macro on a tank like that i would consider a single standard reefbrite(not the XHO version) or a evo strip from reefkoi and if thats not enough light move up from there.

nixer: Thanks for the direct answer.:fun4:Do you have an online dealer you use much to purchase either of those two units?
