Hello all, I just wanted to share a little about what I've been doing for the past 3.5 months.

I received a very nice H. Mag. from Liveaquaria on December 23, 2010.

After about 3 months I split the anemone. Things seem to be good now.

For the record some of the pics before the split show a stressed Mag and I don't deny that. I am currently going to college and have to maintain this tank through my parents... not always easy to do. I had a theory (you may disagree) that cutting the mag would raise the surface area to volume ratio and thus allowing it to require less flow than a single, larger mag. Since the cut the mouths have been a little tighter. Once I was able to give the nems some major TLC (I hadn’t done a water change in 2 months) the mouths have been very tight.

i had some difficulty getting some of the pics to photobucket. but this shows the two nems. also stressed in this photo. the lower one is half shaded and ended up being a little light deprived.

I made better spots for these guys using epoxy, you can also see where the split happened on the left nem: 3/9/11

you can also see how the light deprived nem has a different color and isn't as vibrant yellow as the right nem

when you are in your photobucket account, go to "My Albums" at the top of the page. Hover over the photo that you want to insert and check the box next to the file name. Select all photos that you want, go to the bottom of the page and click "choose action" and select "generate link codes for selected". Under the "IMG for bulletin boards & forums" select the full size. Paste that into your message box here and you're done. It adds the tags for you so you wont need to click anything special on reef central.
 
Good luck with your anemone. H. magnifica is one of the two species that can be "fragged" with a fair amount of success. However it is very early in the process - you received your anemone in December, cut it in half in March... I would imagine it would be healed in another three months or so (if it is going to heal at all).

Let us know how it turns out. Photos every couple of weeks (showing the mouth) would be great. Right now none of your photos show the cut particularly well. I know it can be hard because the anemone naturally curls over the wound, but focus on showing any section of where the anemone was cut.
 
Thanks BonsaiNut! i'll keep the updates coming. now that the nems are looking a bit better it shouldn't be as difficult to get some good photos of the wounds.
 
By the way, I like your "mushrooms" for the anemone frags. I'm not sure I would want them in my display tank - I think they would look a little weird :) but I can't think of a better design for healing a H. magnifica. Nice cup shape, elevated on a stem up in the current and the light. It also keeps them up and away from any dirt/worms/critters down in the sand bed. I could see how you could use a similar design in an aquaculture setup - it would simplify cleaning the bottom of the tank and allow you to keep track of your various clones. Good idea!
 
I like the innovative little pedestals you made for them to keep them off the glass and other corals.
 
haha yeah ugly things aren't they? i'm hoping i can get some mushrooms going on them. and maybe next time i'm home i can make them more... rock like?

but yeah these guys like the sides of their bases a little covered. i think it helps them use less energy to keep upright in the flow. don't know if i'm right about that, but i feel like the less energy they use the faster they heal up and grow
 
I've not been successful keeping a mag for more than a year and a half. That said, I'd look to nature to be your guide. If I were making one I would use the remnants of a table coral from a LR bin and affix it to a piece of tonga branch.
I'm not sure the cup shape makes much of a difference. Do a Google image search on "magnifica diving" and see what you get. They usually like as flat or semi-spherical a shape as possible.

Again... Nice concept.

i made several attempts trying to keep the anemones put on a flat rock on top of the rock pile(probably would have looked nicer). they always balled up the foot and rolled to the bottom. the only thing that seemed to keep them put was the bowl shape.
the fact that it was a forced split might have something to do with it but that's only my speculation.
 
In the wild these guys are up on the highest piece of rock they can get to. They are in deeper water than carpets or sand anemones however - I've never seen them anywhere near the low tide mark. That said, I've seen them within 6" of the surface up on top of a coral bommie. In this case they were completely out on the surface of the rock and their bases were not stuck in any cracks or crevasses. They open up fully with their oral disk spread wider than their base so that their entire columns are hidden from view/protected. Additionally, you often find numbers of clones hunkered down together, where each individual protects the one next to it.

i would assume you're referring to the classic hr glass shape? or is this something different?
