Majestic long term success?

I saw one for sale that was in captivity for a while and am consdering buying it. I never tried one before as I've heard they don't live. If you get them feeding well, are they hardy after they adjust? Or is this always going to be a delicate fish unlikely to live more than a year?

Are you talking majestic angel, I've had one for over 2 years. He's been a tough fish as far as I can tell, eats really well and has grown and thickened up a bunch.

If it's the Majestic Angel you're talking about, I'll have to agree with cougareyes. I kept one in the past. It was pretty hardy. The only problem I had was feeding it when I first put it in my tank. They're a more secretive species of angel and prefers to hide in the rocks for long periods of time. They're big fish though so even a smaller one can go a couple of days without food initially.

I have kept this fish several times over the years and never found it to be a difficult fish to adjust or keep long term.

I don't think that they are difficult fish to keep long term. But they need larger tanks and are far from reef safe: zoas, soft-corals and LPS are likely to be nipped on. If the fish is bored or in a bad mood he may go on a destruction spree. A fellow Reefer back in Germany made that experience with a majestic angel I bought and then gave to him because it turned out way to large for the 120 liter tank I had back then.
My friend had a 1500 liter tank that was size wise OK for the fish. But the fish must have had other grievances and decided one day to make a point by ripping apart every soft-coral that was in that tank.

So I would think twice before buying this species.
If it's a fish you really want and if you have the right tank and are willing to model the tank to the fish's needs I'd say go for it. If you just want it because you saw an liked it but are not willing to make sacrifices for I would recommend not getting it.

To me it was one of the fish that brought me to saltwater in the late 1970s, but I realized that I have not the right size tank for one or better a pair so it's off my list for now.

I had one that eventually refused to eat and died. It ate some food in the beginning but eventually stopped. It was also shy and easily spooked. I think it was from Bali, Indonesia.

For how long did you have it? It may have been one that was caught with cyanide.

IMO They are a very hardy Angel but a time bomb in a reef tank. I fell in love with a cute 1 inch Majestic I saw at the local LFS. After QT she went into a reef tank with a large anemone, clam, star polyps, zoas, and some LPS corals. A few years later, at around four inches, she decided to rip apart the anemone and soon after that all the soft corals. She was with me for 16 years and maxed out around 7 inches in size. As said above they are one of the shyer Angels. Give it a cave with an opening to the front because they spend a lot of time in there. Long term -Fish only tank.

Majestic Angels are beautiful, hardy, and large angels. I guess we don't call them Majestic for no reason. They can be reclusive at first. Growth very fast in large tanks, can can be destructive. I had several. Never had one died on me.
My current tank, I elected to keep Regal Angels instead, but would not mind a well behave Majestic Angel.

I currently keep a navarchus and it has been bulletproof and eating from day one. Like all Pomacanthus they need enough room, mine has been in a 180 standard. I've had mine for just over nine years now, he was in full adult color pattern and about 3.5 inches when I got him and has grown into an impressive fish. Most folks consider this a touchy fish but that has not been my experience and with good water quality and a careful selection of tankmates they can do well.

IME, very hardy if you can find a healthy one and one that is already eating. During my time I have had 3 and had a tough time with one to get eating. They are very shy once they are first introduced, as I recommend them being added before any tangs or other large angels. Grows kind of slow, IMO.
