Making the urs more formal

Since my name, well at least the first letter is being brought up a lot. I feel that I need to comment more in here. The funny thing is I am not sure what. Personally see all sides here. Gary has a very valid point. Just do it. What makes it formal? We make rules and rituals? Lets just meet up and talk fish. Isn't that what makes it a club. Lets keep it simple.

But wouldn't it be easier to have a few people organizing things a little? G wouldn't it be nice if you didnt have to do all the work? Kind of pull it together a little?

And Gary you know I have a ton of respect for you but sometimes it seems like your yelling at us here. I started this thread to have a open discussion with club members and see what we can do to make our club better and learn more. I guess that I just wish I knew it all but I dont so these meetings can help me out.

Although the planing is not easy, the hardest part is keeping everyone happy. There is a need for proactive individuals to make things happen. This should not be mistaken for some sort of leader positions or panel of elders who make all the calls

Not at all what I was thinking I just thought a few people that were more like representatives of the club to help organize meetings. it just seems like frag swaps are more like store things rather than urs meets I thought it would be cool to have it more of a club thing. I guess i am wrong for making the suggestion sorry!

Why are you wrong? I agree with you too. Perhaps you assumed that I assumed that you were talking about actually having the leaders and panel of elders. See it can sometimes be so confusing. Something you and I would never have an issue with if we were talking directly and not typing online. Mark is already a step a head. Just drop by for coffee and chat.

I don't think it's a bad idea. Then again I've only been here for 14 months... What do I know?

wow lots of assuming lol. Yeah to be honest Mark and I get together about every other weekend and its awesome to just talk fish

I don't really understand the back and forth here.

If folks want to get more organized, go for it. Get organized, meet, set goals, etc.

Just don't get ticked if everyone doesn't share your enthusiasm or jump on board.

I remember the last go round and attended the event at the zoo. It was fantastic!

That said, I'm not interested in committing to a regular meeting schedule. Heck, I can barely make to a swap a year!

I think this forum has been a great vehicle for folks to get together, have some swaps and share information. Yes, organized talks and demos are terrific, but I know that I personally learn something from this forum in the few minutes I spend here each day.

Talking fish isn't really what this whole thing needs to end at. Different work shops can help out a lot of people and it always doesn't have to be setup or ran by people who have been here for 15 years either.

If nobody is interested in doing it then fine. We can just make threads like you guys did for the LED build and go from there.

I don't understand the arguments either,Scott.:wavehand:

Anyone or group can organize an event as it is now or focus on projects and solicit participation from interested URS members. If a group wants to get together and start a more formal activity or make commitments to regular meetings that's positive:thumbsup: . It could easily be started with a thread around a specific function . However, formal club membership should not be required for membership in the URS ,imo.:worried2:

Personally I think it would be nice for folks to focus on workshops and fun events; just don't know how much participation would occur.
As for representatives ,I personally prefer to speak for myself.:fun4::beer:

Hey G ,
I like the panel of elders idea by chronological age that is. What's wrong with that?:hb2::lol2:

It is really nice to see you post Randy as it seems like lately everything falls on G and its nice to know we have support from arc..

Not t otake anything away form G but that doesn't sound right to me Randy O has generously hosted many frags swaps at ARC which has also and served as a reef crawl gathering spot, some meetings with guest speakers and sponsor goodies for raffles too. Always does more than his share in supporting the hobby in my experience.

im all for there being specific workshop/certain subject to be talked about on a monthly everyother week type of things where whoever is interested and has the time can show up and a given spot(host house or a local shop or just a coffee spot) and just spread the knowledge and bounce ideas off of eachother... Id hate to see any of the knowledge here wasted(we do have an abundance).. i dont think there needs to be any specific persons that organize it, if someone has an idea for something to address just post it, see what interest there is and then go from there in the planning phase.. Just my .02 cents but i like the idea regardless of what the specifics are

Tom I was kind of talking about this certain topic. I think it all kind of got pushed into g's lap and one of my fears is that we are going to lose support from some of the other fish shops. The key to our club is support from the lfs's we would really be in trouble.

I can honestly say I never started this thread to up set people. I just thought after reading the thread where g mentioned making the club a little more clubby that instead of throwing it all in his lap I would help out maybe formal wasn't the proper wording. Trust me I dont want to have to carry a badge to get into frag swaps or pay monthly dues. I dont really get why everyone so against trying to make something better. i mean what if the idea flopped terribly would it hurt anything?

I don't think there is an argument here. The back and forth is not fighting, at least I didn't think it was. Just the way we talk. I also agree that Randy's meetings have been instrumental to our club in bringing folks together. I personally attended a few and always enjoyed myself. Couple years back John P. had meet that was lots of fun. Steve pro came in to talk a out lighting. Although many have looked to me to organize things, I personally don't know what else to do. Past inviting folks to educational small group things and larger swaps. We can start a series of workshops in the lounge. We can all practice and share scaping techniques. Summer is approaching and it's light out late. We can make a calendar and those who can and want to will show up. If few guys want to step up and creat that calendar and meetings would be great.

I have no idea what is being discussed anymore. Gary and others are saying godspeed, go ahead and be as active as you want to be, be more organized and get more accomplished.

You're repeatedly saying people are against your idea to make things better. No one is against that, people are against the original idea of making the club more formal.
