Male Bangaii Cardinal CARRYING EGGS :)

I can hardly wait to read everyone's posts about the cardinal breeding tips....yesterday I noticed my pair were acting very strange. They were obviously mating. The female looked TERRIBLE by afternoon. She was pale, thin and very skittish. Today I woke up to the mighty helpful male, carrying a full mouth of eggs. How cool is this!??!? NOW ... what do I do?!?! :) Open for any and all advice!!!

LOL, "grandma" is only a cool term when we're talking fish...HAHAHAH...my teenager on the other would lose a limb!

Thanks! I'm going to try for an even clearer shot tonight. He is just in constant motion and the female won't stay out of the pictures. BUT! I'm so excited that I won't give up. :)

For sure! I almost see your name on them already! LOL Now if only I knew just how to keep them safe in my 240 full of hungry hippos! I also wish I had all night to read everything about these little guys. Excited even if I can't fulfill your order for tank raised cardinals! But I'll get it right in time....you're first in line!

Ok R, you get the pick of the litter...which two would you like!?!? I'll flag them for you. LOL!

If this is the first time don't be upset if the male eats them. He will need to carry them for just over 3 weeks before they hatch.

Thanks ReefStew! I happen to believe you may be the Friday ReefStew my fish live for?!?!?!! :)

Do I need to do anything besides leave him alone (and take his picture from across the room with my magic lens?) LOL

Any ideas how I could increase the chances of the fry surviving in my DT (no alternative, birthing or hospital tank set up in my house). Thanks for chiming in on the 3 weeks...and the heads up he may gobble these little jewels up one day. It is his first time, that I'm aware of.

+1 to a 10 gallon grow out. It will ensure safety, healthy diet, and no undue stress or competition.

Also look into building a fake long spine urchin out of black zip ties for the young. It recreates their natural habitat when young.

That's really cool. Back when I had a pair, I always gauged the health of the tank by how often they bred. Clownfish work well for that, too. You're definitely doing something right :)

If you try to move him he will either spit or swallow. I had a pair in my 240 gal. reef & would catch the fry in the early am when he spit them out. There is more info on this on the breeding forum.

So thankful for the replies here!! I had a feeling the stress of trying to catch him would stress him out to the point he wouldn't carry the eggs thru the ordeal. I like the idea of catching the fry ASAP! To the fuge they could go...

So, if he 'conceived' the eggs last night or this morning....and they typically carry them for approx. 3 weeks....and you suggest early morning. I will be setting my alarm with the roosters in 19 days (and thru the grand arrival) **like my positive thinking that they will survive?!?!? ;) I have a friend who can't wait for tank raised cardinals...I must make this possible. I would be a proud gramma!

THANKS for the comment 'you must be doing something right'. This made my day!!! Eggs and a fellow reefer giving me the thumbs up...all in one day. Whooot-wooooo! ;)

How will I ever get anything done in the next three weeks. Guess I'm working from the couch. Better recharge my camera so I'm ready for each morning.

Thanks again everyone! I am thrilled to have a place to share my excitement. I love my fish and no one but this crowd would understand. :)

So if you watch this, you will see my 'love birds'. The male is the larger one in the back that often goes out of focus (I know you guys would have already known that...but for anyone new). In the first few seconds of the video you will see him open his mouth, and if you look careful and quick, you'll see the pink eggs. If you blink, you miss it. It goes out of focus because he is moving and the camera can't keep up in video mode with the movement. This video will give you an idea of just how magic my camera was to capture the cool shots I got today in those split seconds he opens his mouth to readjust the eggs. In the video you will also so what a pest the female is....she won't get out of the way!!! Grrrrr....move over lady, the man has our babies, let him rest! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eD9LMGbunEs

OK...holy exciting! I have been so wrapped up in work and sick kids, I forgot my fish was consuming me just weeks ago. Today I glanced over and saw a mouth full of fins! No more eggs, just lots of lacy fins swimming around in Mr. Cardinal's mouth. WHERE'S MY CAMERA!?!?! Wish me well...I hope I can get a cool shot for everyone to see.

"Reef Stew Friday"....LOL, my kids don't even bother asking "what are we doing tonight?" It is a given we will be visiting AA for some of your delicious 'bug soup' as my boys call it. ;) Thanks for always supplying this!!

You have to watch this in HD and Full Screen if you want to see anything..it isn't going to jump right out at you...you'll have to put effort into watching.

Bangaii Cardinal with eggs. He is in the back most of the time. The rock space I'm shooting thru is miserably small to get ideal video. Look closely, you can see for a split second toward the beginning where he opens his mouth and the baby fins are all over the place. There is also a glimpse towards the end.
