male of the maited pair suddently tripled in size in a week or so out of the blue?

i have a mated pair of false percs. they are a few years old im told and they came with the tank. ive had them a year myself. just recently the tiny male increased in size to where he's not much smaller than the female. this was all of the sudden. any reason for this?

did they go through a divorce or something and the male is morhing to female?

could it be a sign that the female is about to croke and the male is prepping to take over the female position?
