Man - Tons of Flow!

Nothing to see Move along
I have just removed my Koralia 2's and my Maxi Jet Hydor's and installed a Tunze 6080 and upgraded the 2 Maxi Jets to Sure Flow 2000's

There is a TON of flow now. Almost too much! I have sand moving around and some of the corals are a little ****ed off.

I think I am going to remove the white props and install the black props for the Sure Flows but the Tunze is the reason for the sand storm.

Thoughts.

John

Im interested in knowing what people think about too much flow as well. I am running 2 k4's in my 65g with 2 more pulsing for 1 minute 8 times a day and I think it is ****ing off my dog faced puffer. Sorry to steal your thread ;)

I think if its a good random flow and nothing is getting a direct blast, most SPS will be fine. LPS on the other hand probably won't appreciate it as much. SPS can have there flesh ripped off if getting to much direct flow, and LPS will likely not extend polyps as much if they are irritated by to much.

Fish will get used to the high flow, in nature they deal with far more harsh conditions.

I am going to ramp the sure flows down to the 1600. One of mine has a vibration problem at times so I will probably get one of my other 1200 bodies and see if that changes. I have heard that they can rattle and sure enough I have one that does at times.

Right now, my Brancing Hammer is the only LPS that is P'O'd by the flow. I may need to move it.

John

John, I was having the same problem when I had the white impeller on the MJ1200's, they rattled so much, man it drove me absolutely crazy. I took them out, I got 2 MJ900's and ran the smaller impeller, they are perfect and are really quiet now. I love the flow they put out, really random, but strong flow.

Good luck.

OT, hey what is your lighting schedule? I never seem to catch the actinics on your cam. I always seem to see full light or moon lights. I really want to see it with the actinics.
Thanks

Well I put the black prop in and they are unbearably noisy. I am ready to toss them in the trash and go back to my 2 Koralia 2's

We will see tomorrow.

As far as lighting, only the Actinics are on from 11 AM to 1 PM and 8 PM to 9 PM

John

Don't dive up on them John, I have found, and heard alot of people say that if you run the MJ900's with the smaller impeller, they are nice and quiet.
Thats what worked for me.

Ok I will check out the actinics tomorrow.

I don't have any MJ900's and I don't want to buy any. If I am going to spend money, it will be to buy a real pump.

They are really noisy. I can't believe that people run them on the 1200s.

J

Oh, your not kidding either, they are crazy loud. I was getting complaints from the neighbors..........LOL

So I pulled both out and replaced the black prop (1600 gph) on one to the white prop (2000 gph). I remembered that it didn't seem very noisy.

I put it back in and it is quieter than with the black prop. Go figure.

So I am now only running 1 sureflow, 1 tunze 6080 and 2 Koralia 1's (because I have not pulled them yet).

I moved all of my LPS from the direct flow of the tunze and I am going to bed. Lets see what it looks like in the morning!

John

I have also noticed that they do need a little while to "break in" and slime up a little, it took about 4 or 5 days. Mine are super quiet now. I have had them running about 9 months.

Get more Tunze's:) I have some pretty good flow also. 2 Tunze 6100's and 2 Tunze 6055s on a Tunze 7095 controller. These are all controllable Tunze so with the Controlelr you can get random flow, Waves, etc. YOu gotta love the silence of the Tunze, They cannot be matched IMO

Got any for sale :)

I got a 6080 on a magnet holder today but I am not positive about it. It leans forward (toward the sand) and kicked up a lot of sand. Is there any way to fix that?

John

Not sure i had the same issue at first but moved them around a little until no more sand storms. But mine are also controllable so i cut back the flow a little to help.

How does the 1600 prop go in the 4's? Will it go in the 2's?

I have gone to the following...

Tunze 6080 on the middle of the right end pointed at the front glass and downward

MaxiJet 1200 - SureFlow Mod on the left side middle pointed at the front glass and upward

2 Koralia 2's on the middle back glass pointed towards the center of the tank.

John

Looks good John, doesnt look like anything is getting beat up, and looks like you have good surface aggitation.

So I moved the Tunze to the front corner on the right side and pointed it back towards the middle of the tank. I moved my LPS to safer locations and moved my SPS into the flow. Everything seems to be doing better now.

Thanks, John

Gotta love Tunze! They stand behind their product more than any other company I've witnessed. I've sent a 6100 and wavebox pump in for repair on separate occasions and both times they got them back to me within 10 days and rebuilt with brand new motor blocks.
