Manny gallery......

crafty - eh don't trip, the tank is very large for one mantis. It gets along better with any fish than with the crabs. I've been trying to adapt more animals with the mantis, so as long as there is adaquate food to go around then I should have an interesting variety of creatures in the tank.

You mentioned a cuttlefish, dont they need huge tanks? also i think the puffer will eat the mantis when it grows

Yeah I did, but the one I was looking at are the S. Officinalis, which are the smaller ones, several inches in length when fully grown. Easily housed in a 15g-20g tank.

As for the puffer, I think I"ll hold off on that and just get some other less predatory fish.

And a few more pics from this afternoon, this lil bugger is much more playful and less agressive than Manny............

Dapel - for the sake of my computer, please post smaller pics !!! I like them, but they are a bit big - half that size would be plenty - they fit on the screen better that way too.

Puffers will eat your mantis, or get killed trying - you cannot buy any fish with teeth - not triggers, not puffers. Also no wrasses, no groupers, no eels. Fishes that sit steady like scorpions, or hover in the water column like damsels, cardinals, clowns are your best choices. And nothing 'snack size' your fish choices should not be juvies.

And be prepared to lose whatever you add, and if you do add a natural predator to mantis, like a puffer - or a fish with good defenses, be prepared to lose your mantis.

trigger - Yeah sure, I'll see what I can do about those pics.

And also I'm aware of the dangers that may arise with each additional animal that I add, which is why I'm going at this with caution and with less expensive live stock. I would love to see some little Nemos and anemones tho..........................

Nice pics!! I was thinking of getting a mantis (If I ever find one in NY) But what is the smallest tank you would suggest? I have a 2.5 with a few mushrooms and a pistol shrimp, I know the mantis will eat the pistol but will it bother the mushrooms and is the tank too small?

it will not bother the mushrooms, the tank is on the tiny side, and I would not necessarily count on the pistol shrimp being the loser of the argument.

I have another tank its about 5 gallons, but do you think the pistol shrimp whould give the mantis a run for his money? (not that I'm going to find out)
