mantis shrimp??

I think I just saw a mantis shrimp (see pic). We have no livestock yet except what came on the live rock along with this guy.

I heard knocking sounds at two different times today and I thought my daughter was making them with her tongue but I think it must have been this guy. Are the DIY soda bottle traps the best way to trap him?

looks like a mantis to me.

the soda bottle trick works well on catching them, just take a little time.

Before I rip my rock work apart (I think I have a mantis as well) is there any trick to the soda bottle trap? What do you bait it with?

We have a bottle in there now trying to catch him. My husband thinks he might want to keep him and setup an aquarium for him but he's not sure. If he decides not to we will give him away, I'll let you know.

Sorry... this may sound extremely stupid but rather than assume and waste alot of time... using the soda bottle trap. Can I assume that I should bait the trap and set it on its side as opposed to vertically??

Whatever you can do. I don't think there is any steadfast rule. I would try it on it's side at first and put the shrimp as far back as possible. Maybe others can chime in that have actually had to do this before.
