MArine Depot failure question

On aug 11th I placed an order that included a mag 9.5. Although it still functions it is causing my tank to have 110V to ground (just started today) and gives a nice shock. The wierd thing is it doesn't trip the GFI, but anyhow I am wondering if this gets returned to Marine Depot or who I should call. Please Advise.

Boy, when I first saw the title of this thread, I was extremely alarmed and a bit shocked....

I would first recommend to unplug all the equipment you have, then plug in each device one at a time. If you have a volt meter, if would also be very handy. This will allow you to find you which device is giving out the stray current.

Also, you may sometimes experience a slight 'tingle' if your household circuits do not have a true ground. Or, it can be caused by static electricity if the tank is in a carpeted room.

I would recommend searching for "GFCI" and "Grounding Probes" here on RC and reading more about the subject.

If you have determined that it is indeed the pump that is leaking electricity, please give Danner Manufacturing a call at 631-234-5261. They will be able to tell you how to best remedy the problem (grounding the tank, wiring a true ground or replacing the pump). Danner will often request to replace the pumps themselves so they can examine your specific pump.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any further questions.

Sincerely,
Joseph

Sorry about title

Sorry about title

The only thing in that system right now is the mag5. Nothing else is even on the circuit. The thing that surprises me is that the GFI doesnt trip. I have 4 different GFI ciruits seperate breakers for each and none of them trips w/this pump plugged in. However they all trip off with a broken heater i had laying around that used to send stray voltage into the tank. I'll give them a call and see what they say,

Thanks for the fast respose and as always I have been VERY happy with your company.

Hi John,

It's no problem at all... I just happened to be browsing the website on my day off and was a little surprised:)

If the powerhead is leaking just a very small amount of current, there is a chance that it is not powerful enough to trip your GFCI. I would also check your lighting system to make sure it is properly grounded and not contributing to the problem.

Danner is usually very pleasant to work with. If you need anything else from us, feel free to email us or give us a call.

Sincerely,
Joseph
