Mark's 180 Starfire upgrade

Are u upgradiing to a bigger tank Mark? I'm finally pulling the trigger on my decision on getting a 72-48-28 AGE rimless starphire pvc bottom tank next month I been putting off for too long already.

Terry, I need to pick your brain. I'm considering a 36x36x18 tank. What do you think about center overflow w/1 drain hole and 2 return holes? How large should I make the drain? Man, for the life of me, I can't remember what sizes schedule 80 bulk heads come in. I definitely want to go sch 80 on the drain.

I went with one 1.5" drain, and its pretty muched max'd out with my flowstar 1500. If I was to do it over, I would of done a 2" drain. I am not sure if it was me T'ing off my drain that caused the lack of draining capability, but that is infor that I try to pass along when I get asked what I would de differently.

Here is a refernce guide to refresh your memory

Don't do it Sang :p

Looks nice Mark, although I will maintain that the seam in the previous generation never bothered me :spin3:

Hey there Tbone!!!

Definitely Jim. Your external was an awesome skimmer. You are more than welcome to stop on by whenever you want to check out the deluxe. You are always welcome at the Poletti house.

Thanks Mark, I was going to set up the 215 Ultimate Oceanic but after seeing how this addiction is so bad I decide to go with the AGE for a reef and the 215 make it an aggresive tank so I can get rid of all the small tanks I have around the house ( at least that's what I told my wife ) I been collecting all the equipment little by little for at least 2 years, I already got the quote from Tom from AGE so I'm going to do it.

Sang, it's been so long, I forget what size drains I have (I think 1.5"). I have 2 drains and 2 returns on my 180. I run a T4 as return. If I were to do this tank over again, I'd do an external overflow. The internal overflow takes up too much real estate, and harder to clean the back glass.

WOW-WEEEEEEEEEEEE

Would you guys go threaded on both sides of the drain or go with a slip on top and threaded on the bottom? If I go slip on top, I could use some sort of stand pipe for the gurgling noise. Man, I feel like such a noob. I completely forgot how a tank should be set up. With that said, I am beginning to have second thoughts as the potential costs are becoming overwhelming already!

I always go threaded on both sides, but its really a personal choice. You can always use a threaded coupler to still insert the pipe when using threads.

You guys that are starting a new build and have drainage questions. You should have a look at this setup from the RC member "GlassReef":

GlassReef 375 gallon

He uses the "BeanAnimal" overflow found here:
BeanAnimal Overflow

Even if you don't want to use that overflow design. You should give GlassReef's thread a look. He has the cleanest looking build ever and MANY great ideas.

Hey Mark, those are some perty pics. Now let's see some NASTY skimmate!

Definitely agree on Tom's build. Its first class for sure.

Sorry, but no nasty skimate pictures as I did my waterchange on Sunday and cleaned the skimmer for the first time. Maybe next week :p
