Math Alert: Calculate needed iodine dose

From my Icp test apparently I have undetectable levels of iodine. I'm assuming this is accurate test and went out to nearest store and got some Kent Marine iodine supplement. The label on this isn't exactly clear for if you're trying to raise to certain level rather than maintain.

The only clue on the label is that The guaranteed analysis is 0.08%. So now how do I get from this to ml dose needed to get my 50gal system to iodine level of 70 ug/L?

Is that 0.8% iodine by weight, or are they giving the number for iodide or iodate? Also, we need a close estimate of the actual water volume of the system to be sure.

That’s unclear. It just says guaranteed analysis of 0.0794% iodide. Not sure by weight or volume.
My system is 50 gal total

Hi mate ,just seen you're post,I'm off to work now but will get back to you later about it,
Remember if you dose to much iodine it can cause algae blooms in the tank ,in the mean time if you're desperate for an answer you're lfs should be able to work the correct dosage out for you and do a iodine test for you while you wait.

Right I've calculated it quickly for you ,
If what you're saying is right there's no traces of iodine,which I strange,
Using Kent marine iodine supplement you need to add
10 ml of supplement for 3 weeks ,half the dose to 5 ml on the 4 th week then stop and test again

Make sure when you add it you put it in where the flow is so that it spreads evenly round the tank.
I'd suggest you get a water test done at you're local fish shop so you can be sure the levels are correct aswell after the 4 th week.no good doing it while you're dosing you have to wait till end of the 4 th week .so do 1st dose tonight last dose will be in 4 weeks on a Monday evening then at the weekend get a water test done .should be ok by then .

It is reasonable to maintain 0.03-0.06 ppm for iodine.
I would not add anything without a test kit and then the math becomes mute...

In contrast, by adding and testing, your will learn the consumption rate in respect to the strength of whatever product you use....

So just add a few ML's, test and add to the get it in the range, then test every two days to see when it get below 0.03, then add as above, test etc....

All tanks use various amounts of iodine....

Mine uses 1.5 ml per day of Seachem iodide

Argh! This slipped through the cracks.

Okay, so it's 0.08% iodide by weight, which would be 0.08 ppt. Your goal is 70 ug/L, which is about 70 ppb. The supplement is about 80,000 ppb, or about 10,000 times the required concentration. Given that a gallon is about 3785 ml, I get about 0.3 ml per gallon of actual tank volume. I might try 3 ml and measure. Actually, I'd probably drop about 1 ml into a gallon of freshly-mixed saltwater, and see how the measurement changes. The water could be used for water changes with no problems, and you'd get a double-check on the kit and the supplement without risking the tank.

I'd guess the tank might have as little as 20-25g of actual water volume, when it comes time for a dose.

For 50 gallon (if all is water) you will need 16 ml to raise iodide from zero to 0.07 ppm.

0.08 percent is 800 mg iodide per liter

50 gallons is 189 liter times 0.07 ppm is 13 mg of iodide needed.

So 13/800 liter of supplement needed. Which is 0.016 liter which is 16 ml.

Your calculation was correct. Same result as mine
