If you are facing a prolonged power outage, the obvious answer is a generator, for which you can prioritize a pump, even an ordinary air pump with bubbler; return pump if you've got the power; and lights if you've got corals: they can take 3-4 days in the dark with no problems, but 5-7 is getting iffy.

Cold is not a problem as long as the tank does not get below 62 degree. Cooler water holds and retains more oxygen, which is a good thing.
Granted you're going to lose the ac, HEAT could become a problem. Don't let the tank get above 85 degrees, and in the dark, 85 is not a problem. 85 under bright lights can be.

Keep a bottle of Prime on hand: if you have deaths, you'll have ammonia, and Prime converts it so it's not harmful.

If you lose all circulation, you can take a gallon pitcher and climb on a chair, dip and pour a gallon for every gallon in your system. Yep, pour it from as much height as you can, driving oxy bubbles into your water, and keep it up. It'll be good for 4 hours after that. I managed a hundred gallong tank for 8 days this way, and yes, you get up and do it at night, too.

If you get some Penn-Plax battery driven air pumps (Petco, etc) you may be able to spare yourself that. Stores sell out fast in a crisis.

Hope that helps, and good luck!

Bass pro also sells battery powered air pumps for about what the penn-plax cost, in case you are closer to a Bass Pro Shop than a pet store.

It's good advise. And as one who lives in SW Florida (probably only going to get tropical storm winds over here) if you haven't prepared for this hurricane, where have you been hibernating? This is a massive hurricane and has been moving up through the Caribbean oh so slowly toward Florida. We've known for at least a week or 10 days that we needed to start doing prep for this one. If you have been caught off guard, shame on you.

not sure about down there but in Jersey walmart sells the battery powered air pumps in the fishing section.

stay safe guys!

I got hit by Hurricane Charlie in Cape Coral FL in 2004. Power out for a week. I was NOT prepared. Everything in the tank was dead within 24 hours. No circulation, no gas exchange. I learned and have a generator up here in Hurricane free Michigan, but then there was that ice storm 3 years ago. No power for two days. Much better result, tank survived, kept the refrigerator and heat on and watch tv. A little noisy in the driveway, but neighbors were envious

My thoughts and prayers are with those on the entire eastern seaboard. This guy is a monster. Be smart and be safe. Your tank is not worth your life.

I hope it doesn't mess with TBS's reef!

I'm an hour south of TBS LR farm and the worst we've had is 20+ mph winds from the north overnight and switched around to the west this morning. I doubt any of the critters on their rocks even knew anything unusual was happening.

If you are equidistant - would you recommend the bass pro shop air pump, or petco/petsmart air pump?
