Maxspect LED owners!!!

Hi guys,

I have to agree that the white leds have a yellow tinge to them rather than being crisp white. In my 160watt G2 model it is the actinic leds that offset this. I find the colour most aesthetically pleasing to my eyes when the 30watt leds are off. For this reason i wish to ask whether anyone has sourced 20,000K 30watt leds of an alternative high quality brand? Im sorry if this question has been posted before but a summary of other leds replacements would be great.

Also, has anyone monitored the depreciation in lux output since purchasing their model. Im sure many of us wish to confirm the actual replacement requirements of these leds.

Maxspect has announced the pending availability of many new color options. This is an excerpt from GBD...

MAXSPECT will be offering even more color options for their LED aquarium lights, with colors ranging from Pink to Amber. The movement away from the Cool White and Royal Blue bandwagon has surely begun, and this is further evidence. Adding a verity of blue and warm peaks (in contrast to CW+RB) may not do much in terms of raw coral growth, but the visual improvement they provide can be the difference between a windex look and a TOTM look.

Per MAXSPECT’s driver set up, all LEDs are driven at 700mA except for larger 30w and 15w multichips which are driven at 1000mA.

MAXSPECT has not released information on their colored LEDs. Based on the variety offered and early images we’ve seen, I’d venture a guess they are Huey Jann–an LED manufacturer from Taiwain.

MAXSPECT’s LEDs can be easily replaced, which is potentially both good and bad. It’s good as it allows custom color combinations and plenty of experimentation. It can be potentially bad because star mounted LEDs and quick disconnect wiring is not the most reliable or long lived solution; particularly in corrosive saltwater environments.

i am planning a 125g system right now i am very excited about possibly using these lights. i am planning on a lagoon/fringing reef sort of system with some "easy" corals such as leathers, zoas, maybe some sps like birds nest and an anemone. i am also planning on keeping some macros in the display as well. i have just discovered these lights so know very little about the area each unit covers and the layout needed for them. with this said my question for right now is, what light and what number of lights would be good for my tank, which is 60x18x25, and for the livestock listed above?

Tiller I'm in the same boat. I have a 150g, 60x24x24. And because of the weird 32" dimensions of the fixtures. I was thinking of placing (2) 230s in a v shaped pattern to accommodate. Has anyone played around with the arrangement of the fixtures to accommodate our 60 inch lengths? Another option I'm thinking of getting (3) 170s and put them in a triangle shape for my tank. Thoughts?

I would run (3) 110's with the optics Maxspect are about to introduce in 2weeks. That is 48''s worth of fixtures and you can space them evenly and get great coverage.

i understand what optics are, but i don't really understand what they do and the benefit of them. can any body help me with this?
 
From my limited understanding, the optics help to focus (or spread out) the light emmitted from the LED.

For example, if you had a 24" fixture over a 36" tank and wanted to light the whole thing, you might need some wider optics that help spread out the light to the edge. Of course, in doing this, I'm assuming you also lose some par.
 
Usually optics are use the other way. Taking an LED that puts out light at 120-140 degrees and focusing it down to 40, 60 or 80 degrees. So you get more light focused into a smaller area and generally considerably more PAR.

This is especially useful for deeper tanks or when lights are higher above the tank as it will get more light into the water and less in the room.
 
Before I drop the ball and order a single G2-160, will there be any issues with coverage on a 24" wide tank for the next few months and then moving it over to a 36" wide tank?

Also, does anyone know if the included tank mounts can be run from left to right and not front to back? I've yet to see anyone ever have a light fixture with the mounts on the front and the back of the tank.
 
I have 2 G2-110's on my 48x24x20 tank. There is some dimming on the outside corners and the back of my tank. It's dependent on how high and far to the edge and front/back you set the fixtures. You might be stretching it some on a 36" if you are right on top of the tank. Mine are only 2" off the water. You can only run the mounts front to back, due to the rails being mounted that way. I have mine sitting directly on the glass top of my tank. That way I can move them anywhere I need to.
 
I have been running the maxspects since original manufacturer. But have up graded to the Generation 2.

They have continuously improved their product and I look forward to the optics.

I have the 110watt unit (2 of them) above my 4 footer. 50cm wide by 50cm deep. When I first got it the mushrooms nearly melted off (and I was running a twin 15owatt MH with reeflux bulbs and twin T5 German bulbs prior to that).

I have imported and sold many units in New Zealand and tell most people the 110watters will do the trick now with optics I think they will be even better.

I beat that when a Generation 3 comes out it will have moon and season effects that would be cool.

I have have sps growing on the bottom of the tank and on the top, as well as lps and softies.

If I could stop being "Edward Scissor hands" with frags for people I would take photos but it always looks hacked back.

I beat you guys would like NZ$10 sps frags or US$7 which is what I charge.:fun2:.

Yikes, a G3 already in development, with built in controller! I still have not fired up my G2 cree led and it's already going to be obsolete. At this rate, I suspect I have to replace my G2 when the G7 is out in a couple of years?!? I better start saving up now!
