Maxspect Razor

Very excited - birthday present to self - 120W 16k is on the way! ETA next Tue. In 15mo of running our 36G bow front we've been through various lighting options and read/researched about a ton more. Really hoping this is finally the answer!
Once we get it I'll certainly be posting pics - comparing all the various options we've played with up to now.
If someone could make UPS go a little faster I'd really appreciate it!!

I never liked bluish tanks, but the blue channel in this fixture changed my mind.

I currently run it like this:

1: 09:00 - A 0% - B 0%
2: 10:30 - A 100% - B 0%
3: 12:00 - A 100% - B 100%
4: 19:00 - A 100% - B 100%
5: 21:00 - A 0% - B 100%
6: 23:00 - A 0% -B 1%

This way I get to see the tank under the most extreme tones the fixture can put out, which are both stunning. From midnigh till 09:00 it's off through the use of a timer. The moonlight is too strong.

What I don't like about it:

- the shimmer looks very artificial on the sand with different colors dancing franticly. My tank is open and the light bounces off the water surface to the ceiling. It looks like I'm about to be abducted by an UFO. My G2 has a beautiful shimmer, because it has 2 30 watts leds and less colors.

- the moonlight is way too strong to stay on all night.

- the tank top mount is too high. It's a shame it can't be adjusted.

Actually most people argue it is too close . Most hang the fixture a lot higher off the water than the legs can do. It will also spread out the colour banding on the sand. 100% is ridiculously high for either of the channels.

To the naked eye the new razor casts at most the same amount of light as my 3 year old G2-160. You have to take into account that the G2 was less than 1 inch above the tank.

I tried holding the fixture higher and I couldn't get rid of the epileptic fit inducing shimmer.

If the tank was under direct sunlight it would be much brighter than under any fixture. I have red mushrooms 6 inches below the surface and they extend fully. The blue ones can't take it tough. I also have a seriatopora in a corner 6 inches from the surface and it's not happy.

Visually, I wouldn't be happy with less light in the tank than 100% on both channels. The room takes a large amount of indirect sunlight during the day and the tank needs lots of light to make decent difference from the room ambient light.

Love my 2 120w 20.5" 10K units. I have them on my 90g and use preset 1 and a timer to turn them off around 1am because the moonlights are very bright. Nice thing is that when they are switched back on at 6am, they resume the schedule, so it starts with moonlights and ramps up from there - very cool.

I didn't like the way they fit on the center brace, so I finally got some connecting rods from fragtasticreef.com for $25 and installed them yesterday. Now, I like the lights even more.

I've never heard of anyone using the Razor or any light fixture at 1 inch from the water surface. typical mounting height is 6-12 inches with max intensities around 80%.

Check out the Maxspect LED Facebook page for many examples of Razor owner aquarium photos.

With the G2 the two options you were given were either directly above the tank with the rail mount or suspended. I think many people chose the railmount. I burned a couple of corals because I started using the fixture with all channels on for too long right at the beginning.

I know most people prefer to have the fixture high to get better coverage. I like the idea of having the extremes of the tank with less light, so I'm still going to try to bring the fixture lower somehow, to get more contrast between different areas in the tank.

I will be happy with half the height of the mount they send. After these 3 years of having the G2 just 1" above the water (once it fell in the water but survived), I wouldn't be too worried about the sprinkes if I manage to put it at 4".

I would like to see led fixtures from other brands, but I suspect I would still prefer the Razor. The shimmer of fixtures with more diversity of leds (reds and greens) should look even more artificial?

I never liked blue tanks, but the blue channel on this fixture is too beautiful and rich. A couple of pictures with A 0% - B - 100%.

Anybody know how 2x 160w razors would compare with my current 8x54 ati light unit. My tank is 60x30x28" (28" height) and I'm wondering if the razors would pack enough punch to keep a gig anemone happy on the sand as it currently is with my t5 setup.
Thanks in dance,
James

How does this light compare to a Vertex illumina??

My friend has a Vertex Illumina 260 over his 180 and I have 2 Maxspect Razor 120watts over my 90 gallon. We both have one center bar in our tank. The PAR rating is about the same in the middle of the pucks/clusters of LED's, however the PAR of the Razor's drop more towards towards the center bar than the Illumina(measured with his Apogee par meter). You can also tell a slight visual difference in brightness towards the center where the bar is whereas I cannot tell he has a center bar visually (Look at divimik's post (post 607) where you can see the slight visual difference towards the center. My tank looks exactly like divimik's in terms of lighting). Note that this is to be expected, however, as the Razor does not have as many "clusters" of LED's as the Illumina does. With all of that said, the Razor is a very powerful fixture and I love the price that I paid for it vs the much higher price of the Illumina. I'd imagine if you do not have a center brace and could cover your tank with 1 of the 27 inch Razor's, you would not see any difference in the PAR ratings. One last thing to add, we both have our fixtures mounted at 6 inches off the tank.

Im going to send in a couple of my old G2 units. looking forward to the Maxspect Razor, hopefully it does not burn out like my old G2's did!

I have been hoping someone would post a photo of the connector rods, I just ordered mine. What is the space between the fixtures and why did you connect them so the controllers are facing each other?

Do you have any new FTS shots with the fixture that close to show the high & low lit areas you are describing ?
I really like the cardinal pics above!
I think its funny you mention how you do enjoy the blues but never liked blue looking tanks, I've been hearing this alot from people that switched to LEDs. I like blue myself, it would be nice to have it ramp up & down from blue to white'ish to blue again...someday, when I get a ATI LED/T5.

The minimum space between the two is 2", but if you needed them closer, you could use a hack saw or dremel and cut one end off, I suppose.

For me, since I have a canopy, having the two control pads on the inside facing each other was the way to go, or I wouldn't be able to use them on the opposite ends.

I have the 16k version and like them...one even fell in the water and it still works flawlessly.

Thiese are with an Iphone that don't do them justice like Ardeus' ridiculous pics above.

I used the connector rods at the minimum distance, which is indeed 2". It worked out perfectly over my 60" long tank.

I oriented them so the controller interfaces are on the outside ends of the tank. I have my fixtures hanging off custom arms I built from shelf brackets and some lumber.

Ignore the aquascape, that's only a few days after I got things running. It's majorly different now...and there is honest to goodness coraline growing everywhere AND I've already seen some significant acropora growth.

I love the lights. I have 2 of the 27" 160w, 16k units. Still ramping them up to what will eventually be my max power (probably something like A:75 B:95, but i'm experimenting)

Have 2 20 inch maxspect on my 75. How high do u guy hang urs?
Had to hang mine diagonal to get light to spread under my brace
