Maxspect Razor

Going to be building a 30x24x20 (LxWxH) and defenatly considering a Razor or Reefbreeders fixture, if i went with the razor what is better for corals 10k or 16k? I was planning on the 27inch fixture.

Anyone bought the Nano Razor? I have a 16g IM Nuvo aquarium in white and am interested in these to replace the stock lights. The 16g Nuvo is 24"L and about 9"W in the display (not including the filration chambers behind display). The Nuvo comes with two LED lights. I added a third to up the amount of light. They are doing well keeping LPS and softies, but there are two cords per light so six cords total for just the lights. All the cords are driving me batty. I want to upgrade to one fixture instead of three. I also want the option to get a clam or sps in the future and doubt the current lights even with a third added would be sufficient. Too bad Razor isn't available in white to match the tank. The AI even though it comes in white is not even in consideration because I find the light fixtures themselves to be fugly. A big selling point for the Razor lights is that they have the actinic blue LEDs in them. It's the only nano LED that I know of to offer any lights beside your basic whites and blues. Actinic blue really makes colors pop IMO. Also, I love the mounting arm for the Nano Razor. I like that you can adjust the vertical height of the light above tank as well as the horizontal front to back placement of the light over the tank. Not all tanks are made the same so a mounting solution with such versatility is great. I still wish the fixture was offered in white, but oh well, you can't win them all LOL

Also, will the Nano Razor offer sunrise/sunset? I could care less about the gimmicky 'weather patterns' offered by some other LEDs. The sunrise/sunset would be awesome though as not to stun corals by going from darkness to full daylight in a matter of seconds.

This might be a smidge off topice but does anyone know if I can use the maxspect rail system on my 125g? It is 72x18x21.

So I was doing some research.

I really want a Razor but with my luck the day after I bought one there would be an announcement of a new and improved Generation 2 Razor. LOL.

So this is what I came up with:

Maxspect Mazarra - Released 5-27-11 at the Aquarama 2011 Singapore Show
Maxspect Razor - Released 5-17-12 at the Interzoo 2012 Show

Both 1 year apart.

And the trend seems to be that LED companies come out with a new and improved product once a year.

It is now May again and exactly one year since the last Maxspect Fixture was announced.

It was also announced that the Aquarama 2013 Singapore Show will be later this month.

So with all this past information I am willing to bet that there will be a Razor G2 announced at this show (Aquarama 2013 Singapore Show).

What do you guys think?

New for 2013 is the Razor Nano, there will not be any other new products or upgrades from Maxspect until 2014. The Razor series is still less than one year old and CoralVue cannot keep up with demand in the US.

That makes me very very sad.

I may have to go with another LED even though I do not want to.

What I am really looking for is two things:

1. A Controller (Like the one that Ecoxotic has). I will gladly pay extra for this
2. The ability to hook the Razor up to my computer to change things (Like the Radion or Vega).

Will you guys have either of these two options available?

That is why I am waiting for the upgrade as I wanted these two things to be included (Or at least one of them).

I will gladly pay extra for them.

If I know that these options are coming then I will buy a Razor.

But I am not waiting another year.

I will have to get a Vega or Radion I guess.

I really do not want to do that as the Razor looks oh so sweet.

So my question is since there will not be a new Razor anytime soon will there be any upgrades soon like the two that I mentioned?

It seems like all the "High End" LED's have a Controller and/or the ability to hook it up to a Computer with the Maxspect Razor LED being the lone exception.

With LED's being so expensive I expect mine to at the very least to be easy to use.

I like the way this LED looks and I do not want it to get left behind by other LED's that have more options.

I find it odd that you think that a usb hookup and a standalone controller is not just a value add, but a deal breaker. At this point in the game, I have to believe that most people that run LED's likely run reef controllers. Most all reef controllers are Ethernet or wireless Ethernet. Thus making tetherless. A solid value add just for that feature alone. Then you have the hundred other benefits that come with the controller.

I'm not trying to beat up on you for what you want as a feature for your LED's. I'm just trying to add a perspective or maybe even an option that you may not be considering?

One of the things that sold me on the razor was the ease of use and not having to purchase extra items to make it work, the all in one of the Razor for me is one of the best things about it. It seems to me being able to hook a light to a computer, while being cool has no real practical value for the performance of the fixture? You still have the same amount of channels and the same amount of control as the built in controller. You seem to be equating "high end" to bells and whistles that have no bearing on performance. I am not being rude honestly, just trying to understand why you are not just buying a different fixture instead of asking a company to change the platform their lights are built on to be like everyone else's.

Apex controllers are like 500.00

I am not going to spend 500.00 for a controller.

That is just silly.

Ecoxotic sells a very nice controller for their lights for only 50.00

That is a good deal and I would gladly pay 50.00 to 100.00 for a controller.

But 500.00 forget it.

That is the price of the light itself for god sakes.

P.S. I do not know anybody that has a Reef Controller whether they have LED or not nobody I know has them.

Why would you think that everyone has these expensive controllers?

I want ease of use.

I don't care about "Thunderstorms" and other gimmicks.

To be able to go on the computer and change the settings on a large screen with a mouse would be so easy and convenient.

To try to do it on the side of the LED seems like a huge hassle.

I have seen other programs for other LED's where you just drag the bar for each LED up and down to adjust the LED's.

Check out this picture of the Radion Software.

It is quick and easy.

You cannot do that on the edge of the Razor.

That is what I want.

I guess I just don't see it but that's just me. I set my lights with the dials on the side which took like 3 minutes and other than turning them up once, have not touched them since.

anyone uses it for a 48" tank?

i have a 48x24x14" currently using a maxspect g2 170w. Bought a Razor 160w but will only get it in 2 weeks time. Gonna hang it high to cover the whole 48"..

Then that is what you're going to have to pay for... ;)

I will gladly pay for it but it is not an option right now.

I need to know if it will be available soon otherwise Maxspect will loose a sale.

And I can't be the only one out there that feels this way there are many others too.

You sound like someone very fixed on his ways. The 500 dollar reef controller controls everything, and lights are just the low hanging fruit. It can be your ato, leak sensor, pump controller, feed timer, dosed automation, etc.

My point was to consider a controller for versatility. Then it would make the lighting point moot.

What's the price difference to buy one of the expensive lights and the extra controller, vs the razor and a very robust reef controller? Still $500?

My other point was that from what I've seen, most people that jump on the LED boat already seem to have other gadgets like reef controllers, ato's, leak sensors, etc.

Good luck to you with any decision you make. I was just trying to give you a different perspective. Silly is wearing blinders.
