Maxspect Razor

You sound like someone very fixed on his ways. The 500 dollar reef controller controls everything, and lights are just the low hanging fruit. It can be your ato, leak sensor, pump controller, feed timer, dosed automation, etc.

My point was to consider a controller for versatility. Then it would make the lighting point moot.

What's the price difference to buy one of the expensive lights and the extra controller, vs the razor and a very robust reef controller? Still $500?

My other point was that from what I've seen, most people that jump on the LED boat already seem to have other gadgets like reef controllers, ato's, leak sensors, etc.

Good luck to you with any decision you make. I was just trying to give you a different perspective. Silly is wearing blinders.

I keep everything simple.

If I paid 500 for an Apex all it would do is my Lights.

I keep everything manual.

I do not have PH Probes, Auto Top Off, Leak Sensors, Calcium Reactor, Phos Ban Reactor or anything like that.

Heck I do not even have a Protein Skimmer.

My tank is a 29 Gallon with a Heater, Tetra Whisper Filter, Two Hydor Koralia Power Heads, and T5HO Lights right now.

That is it.

So I understand if you have tons of gadgets it is worth it for an Apex but for me 500 to just control my lights is ridiculous.

Like I said Ecoxotic sells a great simple controller for their LED's for only 50.00

Check it out here.

That with a Razor would be perfect in my opinion.

That is all I want - An Apex is overkill for me.

Seems to me that if what you want is a controller via the computer and that is a dealbreaker, then you probably just need to avoid the Razor and go with Ecoxotic.

I can tell you that the Razor's controller, which is built in, is simple and easy to use. Unless you want to constantly be changing your lighting color percentages, you set it up once and forget it. You have a built in sunrise to sunset programming capability. I have 2 120w units on my tank and love them. I set them up originally and never touch them since, so having to have a computer controlled capability for lights, that I wouldn't use more than once or twice, is overkill for me.

Having done a ton of research before buying mine, I believe the Razor to be one of the best values out there and I would not want to pay more to have the ability to make adjustments on a computer screen. Judging from the fact that they are having issues keeping up with demand, others don't want to either.

As for the Apex, I recently got one mainly for the heater control, so I don't have a heater go haywire and boil my tank since they often fail in the on position. I thought of buying a simple temp controller, but that would be almost $100 and you can get an Apex Lite for $114 - well worth protecting everything in your tank from being killed by a faulty $30 heater.

Were do you get 114?

I looked up the Apex Lite and it was 369

Sorry, you're correct. I was looking at the Reefkeeper Lite - it is $114. I actually went with the Apex Lite as I use it for more than the heater control, I use the web ability to check temp and ph when on the road traveling and I use the feeder mode for turning off powerheads temporarily when feeding. Apex Jr. is only $219, but the Lite is $369.

Just picked up this new toy for my 48" tank and did not have a chance to set it up. It is an awesome design and very aesthetic looking lighting fixture to have.

Maxspect Razor 16k want to get Atintic pop affect. Interested in showing sps/lps colors instead of growth. What A and B combo should I try?

I personally like 100% Blue, 60% white. I keep mine at 100% blue, 90% white, however just to get more PAR for my SPS =).

100 blue/ 60 white and 100 blue, 90 white give more blue look?

No. I need the extra PAR for my SPS which is why I have my whites at 90% when it is all ramped up for better growth. My favorite look of the corals, however, is whenever my light hits the 100% blue / 60% white during ramp down for the night.

Pretty much exactly what I do. I let the white channel peak during the day, at 3 PM, IIRC, while I'm at work, which makes my SPS happy. As the day wears on, and I get home, the white has dialed down, favoring the blue channel, which looks better (to my eyes). Best of both worlds really. SPS get what they need, I get to see the best color rendition later in the day/at night.

Dunc - how deep is your tank? You run your white channel higher than me (I peak at 75) I'm curious about your tank depth, and what kind of distance from the fixtures your SPS are at. I've bleached out 2 SPS so far, including an Acropora milliepora, which I didn't think was possible given their light hungry-ness.

Speaking of, to those who think that LED's, especially the Razors aren't powerful, (probably no one in this thread) put that in your reactor and smoke it :strooper:

My tank is a standard 90 gallon, so 24 inches deep.

I tried searching in this thread, but anyone have any idea how a 20" 120W would look over a 40 breeder? I know everyone suggests at least one 27", but I'm mostly going for the look since I'll be doing only zoas/palys, so I'm just worried about spread. If you guys don't think it'll work, I'll probably have to go with a 24" reefbreeders to save money.
