May Mtg

Sounds great Art, looking forward to this one (still contemplating what to bring food-wise).

How about brownies? Just no nuts, but extra chocolate. :)

Sounds good! (that's how I like them too) Funny about the potato salad, no pressure or anything ;)

Mel, the Q-water downstairs and in the student labs tests 0 TDS on the meters from the group buy, so I think it's probably ok to use for making standard solutions.

No volunteers for the fish discussion? What if we made it a group effort? I think Larry's point is interesting. Maybe the brave soul(s) who take(s) this on could bring that up as part of the discussion: the many fish that have a purpose or "job" in our reeftanks (other than swimming around and looking pretty!).

I'd be willing to help out on a later club meeting discussion about quarantine/acclimation and fish diseases too if anyone would be interested. Unfortunately or fortunately, I've had experiences with many of them

Ok great Matt...I will run down there and get some of Steve's water.

So then everyone should definitely bring their TDS meters!

Let me think a bit about how to handle this topic. I thought that a lot of us could definitely contribute to the discussion. That's why I was just thinking of having someone lead the discussion rather than giving a whole presentation. I'll figure it out and get back to you guys (got Brent's parents in town right now, til Tuesday).

I'd be willing to do some research and talk a bit about some of the common tangs. If we can get a few more people to take an hour or so of their time to research and give maybe a 5 min presentation I'm sure we can run through a couple of the more common aquarium fish and we can have others give their experience to add to the open discussions. I suspect this format will lead to a longer than normal topic discussion so we may want to consider that and try to divide all speakers/input so it doesn't run too long (maybe an hour or so).

Matt wouldn't even need to do research to talk about clowns... but everyone loves clowns so I hope he'll cover them. Other suggestions:
Shrimp
blennies
butterflies
basslets
damsels
dottybacks
cardinals
gobies
inverts
hawkfish
wrasses
Obviously, we couldn't cover all of these so maybe we can discuss whichever ones you are willing to discuss and if need be, we can carry it over to the next meeting.

I could handle gobies and blennies. I could also do some other ones, like mandarins if need be.

Anyone else have a decent amount of experience with any of these groups of fish? Or if you don't...just research it a bit in the mean time and then present to us what you learn! It's a great way to learn new stuff about reef-related things that maybe you normally wouldn't.

How about making this easy and ensuring audience participation? Just go around the room and ask everyone about a fish or two they have in the possession, what they know about the fish from their research, what they most like and dislike about the fish since owning it, etc. Everyone particpates, everyone learns, and more discussions will result from the "introductions".

I think that's a very good idea Dave. I wanted this to be a sort of "group" discussion rather than one person doing all the talking.

This will work out!

I have a lawn mower blennie and a rainford gobie I could talk about. I think a lot of you experienced reefers know about them but some of the other newbies might want to know about these guys. Or I could talk about coral banded and/or peppermint shrimp. Just let me know.

I think those are good fish/shrimp to discuss. I definitely don't know enough about them. I would LOVE to have a trigger and a puffer. Does anyone have those?

I have a rainford gobie!!! He's super fat with so much to eat... lol Ummm, puffer/trigger not a good idea in a reef tank... Great for a FOWLR tank though... I know a few people with puffers that love their personality...

Like Mel, I will not be able to make this meeting... Dang it again... I have to go to GA for business... Oh well... Dang people wanting to give me money is getting in the way of my reefing...

oh! ok great. thanks.

And good news...I get to go afterall! They decided to leave on sunday instead of saturday!

Website updated. I need directions to Art's house, though. I used to have them. But the meeting will be ancient history by the time I dig through my old emails and/or desk and locate them...

Directions to meeting.

Ok everyone I would like to have the meeting at 2:00pm on the 20th. I'm going to grill chicken and a beef brisket so bring whatever you think will go with it. If you have kids, bring them and if they want they can swim while we have the meeting. They can swim in the pool not the tank :)
:D
