That's cool! I always had a fascination for fish. I remember as early as 3rd grade stealing money from my mom's purse to get fish for my plastic container (where you generally kept hermit crabs in). My favorite was a bumble bee goby at that age. Then 5th through sophomore year in college was cichlids. Then saltwater.

I just started saltwater...but when I was 9 my neighbor gave me my first fish tank and first fish it was a red devil, I've had at least 1 tank running since then now I have 6 running lol...He had a big 300 gallon freshwater tank with about 20 different cichlids and I would do exactly what the kid in this thread does, I've been hooked ever since...The dovii and nandopsis haitiensis were my favorites until about 4 years ago when I started having electric blue jack dempseys

My father had a big ole Jack Dempsey 45 years ago in a slate bottom aquarium with stainless steel frame and black sealant (that's how they were made back then). I bred the regular ones 40 years ago or so before electric blues were ever available.

That's terrific about the enthusiasm your neighbors' kids have for your tank. You are kind to allow them to indulge their thirst.

The tank my neighbor gave me was the one with the stainless steel frame...i still have it in storage, your Definetly an og if you had one of those...I'm really into the whole breeding thing...There is only a handful of cichlids I haven't bred...now I'm into coral and I'm in love, wish I would have started awhile ago seems like I got into it around the time that everything is about names and money

In my early to mid teens I had numerous FW tanks going and bred a number of fishes, though cichlids were my faves. I would sell surplus fry to the LFS. For an 8th grade science project, I documented the spawning and rearing of convict cichlids as a Super 8 movie. I also threw some genetics in there, as I paired up striped and pink convicts and then counted the ratio of striped and pink offspring. Striped was dominant and only the homozygous recessive condition resulted in pink convicts.

The FW fish I am proudest of having bred are discus, though I confess it just happened without any special effort on my part. :)

I had discus for about 6 months, I wanted to breed them so bad but my tank had crash from me dosing anti biotic and I lost all 6 of my discus...i had the tank setup nice with live plants and driftwood and a few tetras and a couple dwarf cichlids...hats off to you for breeding them!!!

Thanks. Somewhere I have hi8 video tape of their spawning (assuming the tape hasn't deteriorated by this time). Your discus tank sounds well planned and thought out.

Well I must be a really OG. I have two of them. I've had them since 6th grade. One (20H) has a broken pane. I'll fix it 'one of these days'! The other one (6 g.) still holds water. I last used it about 5 years ago.

When I was a kid (mid 20th century) they were called aquariums. Now they are known as metaframe tanks! :lolspin:

I also have the stainless steel light/canopy for them. Used to use those tubular incandescent bulbs. It would be cool to retrofit with LED and make it a reef tank!

Carlos, I almost forgot to comment on the pics after taking a trip down memory lane!

Very cute pics. Be careful or you'll be setting up a tank for those kids soon! :)
