MB7 + BioFuel (or Vodka) - Show Thread

Reefsic, just curious if you have thought about running biopellets instead of running mb7 + biofuel? I only ask because I'm about to setup a biopellet reactor because I wanted to avoid the daily vodka dosing.

Im already seeing a significant improvement. Everything is looking much cleaner and colors are starting to really show. I'm also dosing 10ml of Brightwell VitaMarin-C once a week; palys and zoos are looking alot more healthier!

Awesome to see people having success with this. I am in my first week of seeding the tank with mb7. Ill be starting vodka after the second week. Keep pics coming.

What is the coral in the lower right with purple and green?

Your tank looks awesome. I want to build a tank that is almost your exact dimensions. Would you mind sending me some pictures of your tank setup?
Thanks! I'll take some more pictures when I've got time.
Acropora Turaki. ORA Hawkins I believe.

Your tank looks awesome! I love that aquascaping, plenty of room for corals to grow out.

Hi clowndude,

Yeah, I thought about biopellets for awhile but didnt want to add another reactor/feed pump to my system. I'm running out of cabinet space as it is, so I just thought it would be more cost effective running MB7+Vodka. I have a few friends that are using the biopellet method and are experiencing great result.

GL!

Thx R08!

Yeah, I've always liked the open look. Plus, as an SPS nut you always have to think ahead and provide much needed real estate for Acro frags growing into colonies...I mean...look at your tank...LOL!

I am thinking of mb7 and biofuel. I got burnt with the tropic Marin pro bioactif salt with a cyan bacteria outbreak, that after aggressive water changes I have been able to almost eradicated. What do you guys do to avoid it in you tanks?

Tank is looking really good. I really like how you did aquascape. Can't wait to see in a few months from now. Keep up the great work.

Thank you. It was much worse a month back. Cyano was everywhere! Now it has deteriorated and almost looks like a powdery purple'ish color. Looks kinda cool, but is slowly wiping out. The bubble algae is also starting to deteriorate! Crossed fingers

I'll do my best to update with pics!

Oh that sounds like my tank right now. I'm firing up my biopellet reactor tonight and I hope my tank is where yours is in a month or so.

Tank is looking very good. What do you atribute the most improvement to?

TIA

Gary,

I think it would be a bit too early to speculate, but I did notice a drastic reduction in the algae (green film) that grows on glass, after just the first 2 days of seeding MB7. After 2 days on MB7 is when I noticed the Cyano looking a bit starved and slowly started to disappear.

I just started dosing .6ml of Vodka last nite. The only other additive is 10ml of VitC and Mag weekly. I plan to start dosing the Potassium, Iodine, and Iron again once I reach or get close to ULNS! AA in case too much color is lost!

My only concern at this point is that my Skimmer is a bit underrated. To my understanding, this method requires a huge skimmer; I'm running a NAC7 Cone on a 190g. The skimmer itself kicks @ss and pulls out nasty, dark, smelly skimmate. I worry more about the GPH...errr SCFH!

ur lucky ive been dosing mb7/biofuel n vinegar but 3 weeks ago i started to do vodka, and im still get green all over my glass...weird thing is that my level are low alrdy

how often do u dose vodka?

I had purchased BioFuel, but had almost a full bottle of Vodka in my Freezer so I exchanged the BF for more MB7, and went with the Vodka.

I just started dosing Vodka yesterday; starting slow at .6ml which I split 2x daily....so .3ml twice a day. According to Sonny's notes, too much algae on glass = cut back MB7. If you've past the 2 week seeding period, you should only have to dose MB7 1-2x a week.

You said seeding MB7. Does that mean that you can actually stop MB7 after a while and just dose the carbon source/vodka/vinegar? Oh you answered my question while I was posting.

Thanks

I'm learning just like you! I came off Zeovit just 3-4 months ago so MB7+(Carbon Source) is still rather new to me. I just thought this was a method similar to Zeo, just more cost effective and locally available!!!

Care to post pics of your current DT?

No way, all I have now are a bunch of rocks with only a few frags that survived the crash of 2010. I have been workin at getting my sumps and fuges rearranged to my liking and now starting to work on putting more flow in the display along with cleaning up and testing everything that I know to test for. Right now I am only running small amount of carbon. Will start back on MB7 and vodka/vinegar and maybe GFO. Gonna take things kinda slow in the changes and try to get back where I was before all the drama. Sorry for all the rambling.

Wow... so much information in this post... I have been researching for the past month and I still can't decide on Zeo, Vodka, or the pellets....

If cost is not a factor is there really one that's better than the other ?
The more I read on ULNS the harder it is for me to decide....

I know one thing for sure... I am starting one of these methods this week...

Thanks,
Cam

Well, IME Zeovit worked very well for me but again the Con is that when you purchase the additives you have to pay an arm and a leg for shipping! Not to mention the Zeo Reactor and stones!

I can run down to any of the LFS' and 4/5 will have Brightwell prods in stock.

Biopellets seem to be a great method, but in my situation, I cant afford to add another feed pump for the pellet reactor (space and electricity). Again, this is my situation...some may have room for another reactor in their stand.

This is why I left Zeo and moved to MB7+Carbon Source!

I am interested to see how it works out for you. I am currently running Zeovit a little over two years. Like you I am happy with the results but not happy about the cost and availability. BTW your tank looks nice.

Good luck,

The biggest difference I see is it allows me to keep LOTS of fish in a relatively small amount of water and feed them like crazy. My 175 on page 1 has 30 fish (8 of which are huge tangs/rabbit) and my 90 has close to 20 fish--5 tangs.

The 175 has 170 net gal

The 90 has 60 net gal

I incorporated vinegar to see if it would make some cyano go away and it has. 8ml of vinegar equals 1 ml of vodka. I currently dose 21.5ml of vodka and 24ml of vinegar daily on my 175 along with 24 drops of MB7. The 90 gets 8ml of vodka and 16ml of vinegar with 10 gtts of MB7 daily.

biopellets in theory would work, but it's harder to start slow and work your way up in a closed reactor.

I've been dosing for 2 years. I used the dosing schedule in the Reefkeeper magazine. I'm curious about adding a little sugar to the equation for VSV at this point since the vinegar obviously allowed something to outcompete the cyano.
