MB7 + BioFuel (or Vodka) - Show Thread

Thanks xsboost. I just followed the directions on the MB7 bottle. I was dosing 20ml daily during the 2 week seeding period of MB7.

This is still all new to me so I'm learning as I go, but no....no brown film (crossed fingers)!

subscribed, heres my tank (still need some more sps and growout)

Just an update on my progress with MB7+Vodka...

Things are looking great. Water is crisp and super clean. Green algae film on glass has almost completely seized. Cyano on LR is almost completely gone. The only difference I have noticed is that I am starting to see a slight increase in bubble algae and cyano patches, on sandbed only!!!

Any thoughts on what could be causing this or how to control either of the two???

Maybe cut back on the vodka, add a bit of vinegar and see if that helps.

I'm a bit hesitant to add another carbon source in Vinegar! I have already cut back a bit on the Vodka and currently dosing 1ml/day (190g/230g Total Vol.) which I cut in half... .5ml in the AM, and another .5ml in the PM. I'm only dosing 10ml of MB7 every other day.

Reefsic, Sorry I can't provide help on the current bubble algae issue. I'm in a learning mode here. I'm in the process of setting up a new 112g SPS tank, currently waiting on custom ordered tank to arrive, all other components are ready to go. I'd like to start the tank up with MP7/Vodka, can you point me in the direction of some literature on how to get started with the process. Is it recommended to start the tank off with the process or is it recommended to let the cycle complete? Thanks for the great topic here, I'm subscribed.

I would definitely let the tank completely cycle. Here's what I found to be huge help...

Dont' add vinegar, replace some vodka with it--it will help with the cyano. 1ml of vodka is equal to 8ml of vinegar. I've done this the last month d/t cyano on sand and it's almost gone

Ray,
I just started to add vinegar to my carbon dosing regimen with no adverse side effects. I have been looking up the "œVSV" method recently and decided to mix up my carbon source for more diverse bacterial strains. Not to sold on sugar yet so just "œV-V" for me. I am dosing 1ml of vinegar to 3ml vodka, still too early to tell but doing good now.
As for the Cyano"¦ Lot of people have had success with an increase in bacteria source and decreasing the carbon source.

Thanks for the helpful input Mike. That's exactly what I am doing...cut my Vodka dosage in half and started dosing MB7 more frequently (same dosage). We'll see how it pans out!

Reefsic definitely keep us posted I'm also very interested in how your results turn out. Great job btw !

Just curious, but do you have that seabass in your sig pic in your reef??? I have caught many of those in my days of fishing. Did not think that they could withstand tropical temps.

HA no no , I'm just interested in aquaculture(of black sea bass) , and when I first started posting on this forum (which now I'm addicted to) that's just the first of a fish that came to mind. I've just started my 29 gal Biocube and so once I get some pretty fish/corals in I think I'm going to change my avatar to something more colorful. I"m getting a degree in oceanography right now (senior) and I figured I'd start small and work my way up :) I've also caught a handful of these guys and it's a lot of fun. Good job on the ID though !

For those of you dosing Vodka/MB7, how do you have your sump setup? Any Fuge? My origiinal plan was to setup a fuge with mineral mud and chaeto but I'm thinking that becomes irrelevant with the vodka/mb7 dosing.

I'm running Fuge'less. I'm still running Zeovit Stones which is good for another month or so, but when those come out I do not plan on using them anymore. I do however still use Activated Carbon in a media bag, placed in passive flow.

I ran a fuge before MB7/Vodka but pulled it once I got a LNS.

Did you remove just your chaeto or did you also have live sand, rock, etc in your fuge that was removed as well? Any pics of your sump setup would be great.
