Me vs Zoa Pox, Here's my saga

Over the past few weeks I've had a couple frags die out of the blue after looking totally healthy the day before. It starts by them closing up like they do every night, except they never reopen. Eventually they start to shrivel and "melt" until there is nothing left. A few days ago I noticed some white spots on my frags. I have since figured out they they are in fact zoa pox and so the treatment has begun. I want to chronicle my efforts to rid my zoas of pox so that others will either A)be able to copy my success, B)Not waste their time on the same efforts that I failed at.

Here are the zoa-pox frags:
These are purple hornets the head has since turned red and the trunk is skinny. I don't think they'll make it :(

Less obvious here, but you can see the spots

The hospital tank is a 10g tank that I placed an egg crate rack 2" off the bottom the spans the entire tank. I used 80% water from my tank and 20% new saltwater. I then added a pump, heater, power filter, and light. I started by dipping them in Reef dip: Coral Disinfectant (iodine based) for 10 minutes. I then placed them into the new hospital tank. I then added one packet of Furan II and will follow the Furan II treatment protocol. I will keep you all updated on success or failure.

Here's the hospital tank:

My question is: Should I put all my zoas in here? I have about 20 others but after I inspected them they have absolutely no sign of zoa pox. I will keep you updated. If anyone has suggestions for me to try let me know.

Check weekly on the others, use a turkey baster to blow water on them to make them close to be able to inspect. Pox IMO is very infectious. I had some polyps get it in 1 side of a 100gal then with in a couple days some polyps all the way on the other side got pox.

How long dose pox last? I lost two small colonies and have only a few polyps left on two others. A fifth larger colony is just beginning to open back up. Is it safe to add new zoas?

My 'palys' saw no damage/stress.

It definitely spreads FAST, good to see you have those in qt!

On my Jap.Deepwaters I fought it for 2 months. with melting. Lost several colonies and multiple frags (different morphs to ).

So far so good. Today two polys of the Nuclear Sunshines that hadn't opened in almost a week were fully open. The tank received another dosing of furan II, and will get a 25% water change tomorrow. They will in the end get 4 doses of furan II and 2 25% water changes (its a four day total course). After that I will monitor the zoas and possibly repeat treatment. Pics will come later.

Are you treating the whole tank or just dipping them? I've never seen the "Furan II treatment protocol" for in tank treatments.

650 I finally finished my month plus pox battle with my Japanese deep waters. One beautiful 10 polyp frag lost. Half of another saved. The surviving frag is looking pretty good now. All polyps open and color is bright.

I would like to learn more on this as well. I also her Charles mention something about peroxide in another thread.

Good to know Bass.
Cat, it's Peroxide treatment I heard here on RC 90% Tank water and 10% peroxide. DIP

Do you know if its for POX or something else.

IME pox is very easy to treat. At the first sign i take the frag/colony and a couple close to it and dip them in a cup RO water brought to temp and 1 full packet of Furan2 for roughly 5min. Then they go into QT. The following day i do 1 full packet of Furan2 in 1 cup of freshly made SW for 20-30min. I do the same thing the 3rd day then let them sit for a week. If after a week there are still spots present i repeat the procedure but i do not use RO water for round 2. All of the dips are done in a ziplock bag and then I float them in my sump so i can keep the temp up. Furan2 seems to work better at higher temps.

I've had very very good luck against pox doing this. Good luck.

NOt in the case with some Deepwater Jap.polyps.

Yah i don't have any of those so cannot comment on those particular morphs.

Mines took MONTHS to fight off. on several 150-200 polyp colonies and frags. after months of battling them with different medicines (other gram positive/negative meds ), furan2 and peroxide dips.. I was left with only 2 colonies and a small frag. that's now healthy and having babies. They love LOW light and good flow.

My experience with this was that by the time I noticed symptoms, it had already spread to the other colonies within my tank. I didn't have the materials (or knowledge) available to attempt a quarantine tank treatment. Eventually lost most all of the zoas within my tank. Fairly sure it originated with some frags I had introduced.

This was about five months ago, I have a group of about six heads hanging on that seem to be doing well, but aren't growing too fast. Would the consensus be that at this point it is safe to purchase a few more colonies?

It was a real bummer having so many wiped out so fast.

Wait a couple weeks to ensure the remaining polyps don't have it anymore. then quarantine the new ones before you add them.

This was several months back. What is left in the tank appears to be free of any visible signs, and has been for awhile. I don't know how long something like this could exist within the tank though. Presumably it is cleared out if I have a few heads doing well.

You are at a good spot to do dips on all incoming zoas. This will help ensure you don't get pox again. Furan2 is your friend ;)

did this get answered because i didnt see it? is he treating the entrie qt or taking them out and dipping and putting them back in qt?
I just set up my qt tank and would really like to know. Im kinda waiting on a response, because i dont know what route to go. So far ive heard 3 diferent ways to do this.
(1) 3 day treatment with dips,
(2) 3 day treatment w/ dips w/ ro the frist day which i saw on this thread via "impures" post.
(3) the in-qt-tank treatment that "tcwoodrn" is doing.

Im trying to figure out which route to go and i need to start ASAP! someone help!
