Welcome to the SWAM-Salt Water Addicts of Maine!
Our goal is to educate each other, newbies and anyone interested in the topic of a salt water system and it's inhabitants. We promote responsible stewardship of our aquatic pets. We encourage buyers to learn about the fish, coral or invertebrates before they purchase them so the proper environment is established for them to not just survive in but thrive in.
SWAM has been holding meets for several years. We meet once a month, with the exception of Dec. We try to meet on the first weekend of the month unless a holiday falls on that weekend. Due to logistical issues of the state of Maine, we alternate meets between Portland to Bangor, and areas in-between.
We know there are many techniques used to run a marine aquarium, are open minded and do not endorse any one technique. Our meets enable us learn from others experiences, to swap or sell coral frags, enjoy tank tours and field trips, and have in depth discussions on various topics.
We hold an annual picnic/auction to help raise funds for our annual guest speaker. In 2005 we hosted speakers such as Greg Hiller of Boston Reef Society, (BRS), Anthony Calfo, author of “Book of Coral Propagation Vol 1†and Frank Marini whose expertise is fish breeding and fish only systems. In 2006 we hosted Barry Neigut of ClamsDirect who gave us lots of information on keeping clams in our aquariums. We have also worked in conjunction with BRS to organize guest speakers to visit our area.
Many have sponsored our club, such as local fish shops (LFS), local small business, larger distributors of marine products, and last but not least, we as club members and participants. Our meets are free and open to the public. For those who want to help keep the club active, we do have an annual fee for membership to SWAM of $20.00. The SWAM card will give you a discount at some LFS, free admission into our yearly speaker event, and most importantly, the support to allow SWAM to host an annual speaker.
We are currently working on a website. Until then dues can be paid thru Paypal at dan_denise@hotmail.com or mailed to:
