Mhucasey's SPS obsession

tank is looking great !

don't you just hate it when your tank is on cruise control! :sad1:

i cant wait to be bored :D

pink piece is looking really sweet !

As weird as it sounds, I much prefer when there is lots to do. I have been tempted to change up the filtration or the design lately just because there isn't much to do and coral ultimately grows S L O W. I keep talking myself out of messing with the filtration because it is working better than anything I've ever tried and it really is no nonsense.

The lighting is a different matter - I have a bunch of bulbs cause I like to buy them when they are on sale and so I change up the mix from time to time, way more than I should:spin3:

I'm really happy with that pink piece also, it has tiny polyps but it has colored up nicely and seems to be doing well.

The new Pink acro with blue tips and Hoeki. This picture was adjusted like crazy to try to dial down the color. Its a little less saturated to the eye in real life but a really nice color:

That pink acro with blue tips is sick!!!

Sunday and another trip to AquaSD, they had some new stuff that I couldn't pass up. First, they had this one:
ASDPhoenixRisingAcro-150frag-SALEPRICE-100_zpsrgxm3izz.jpg

I got a frag of it and its settling in nicely:

They also had some pink dragon, so I got a frag of that too:

Its not quite that pink in person but this is desaturated to 65% or so to get it to look somewhat like the real thing.

Last night I did more renovating, the "Flubbery thing" in the front right side of the tank was exchanged for some rock from the small tank, and I moved more stuff around. Things are looking pretty good:

I saw your post on the T5 lighting thread, and wondered about something... your bulbs don't really follow any order: Do you select bulbs for particular parts of the tank.. or is the spread off the reflectors wide enough to encompass the tank?

As of right now, with my 6 bulb Tek Elite I have the following:
3 X Blue Plus and 3 X Coral Plus, all of which one after another order type.

I am about to purchase an 8 bulb ATI Sunpower, and am considering adding two Aqua Blue Specials to the mix (Though honestly, I haven't a clue what I should add... I used to have Radium halides before switching to T5's.. and my current 6 bulb configuration was a guess to reach decent spectrum coverage.

I love the look of your FTS's!!

I need to move to Cali! Lol

Nice pick ups!
Well much of the LFS stores in the San Diego area are pretty poor when it comes to SPS but luckily there is AquaSD. I wish them all the success in the world, they have a bold venture there. In SoCal where electricity is ridiculously expensive they use More radium 400 waters than you can count, an they have so many kinds of coral, not only SPS but the best LPS and Zoas I have ever seen....if you are into that word of thing:p
The first coral from this trip is one I have been lusting for ever since I saw it grown out in another tank, Im very excited to get it!

Here is how I start with the bulb mix - First I put blue bulbs in the #3 and #6 positions(the "Dawn" circuit). I tried a white and a blue when I first got the fixture but it just looked like the fixture was going dim.

I then have been putting the Purple bulb in either of the the center two slots more than the outside just to give more even coverage. The closer the purple is to the front the more of an effect it will have on the overall color.

Then I try to fill in here and there with the other whites and blues. I change my mix far too often based on whether Im liking it more white, or blue, or brighter or dimmer. The very first bulb has a big effect on the overall perception of the tank color and brightness, so a white bulb there has more of an effect than in back.

There is no brighter bulb than the Aquablue Special, and I like it for that reason first off. Secondly, I have seen a lot of amazing tanks with T5s and a vast proportion of them use at least one ABS(or KZ Coral Light, which is the same). Something about it seems to be right. So that being said, if you like the overall color of the tank with the 3B+ and 3C+, and just want more of the same, Id just get one more each. If you would like it brighter and a touch whiter, I'd add two Giesemann Aqablue Azures, If you want it even brighter and much more toward the white, The ABS would be perfect. I have all those bulbs, if I have time tonight I will see if I can simulate the combos in comparison with what I am using at the current time.
Currently I'm using:
B+
Aquablue Azure
Actinic Blue
Fiji Purple
ABS

Sounds good, I am glad I have two new ABS's then, because it sounds like those will be the bulbs I want to add for the color I want. Color to me, right now, isn't my highest priority, I'm looking for broader spectrum... but thankfully I like things brighter and a little more whiter as well. Win, win!

Whoa! I tried that combo out tonight and let me tell you, it is seriously bright!. It is very white, to the point of dulling colors a tiny bit. Colors are pretty well represented as in yellows not looking greenish, reds not looking brownish, etc. Here is a comparison shot of my current combo, the 3C+/3B+/2ABS combo, and for comparison 3 C+ and 3B+ only. You may want to go with one ABS and One blue plus to round out your 8 bulb fixture:

Get a pair of light work gloves and swap bulbs to different positions to see what you like best, don't feel locked in to any one order of bulbs.

Woody is positively enthralled by the aquarium:)

A couple of shots; First the tricolor that almost died on me...It STNd during my Zeovit experience, and I was able to save a small handful of branches from a cantaloupe size colony. I took the best of them and glued them to a roundish rock like a colony. This was the frankenstein about a year ago, Feb 6 of 2014:

It grew back slowly but surely, and is better looking than it was before, and almost the same size:

And a nice light yellowish green acro with reddish polyps, starting to table out:

Love that pic of Woody :)

Acros are looking very colorful and super healthy mate, thanks for taking the time to do those different spectrum comparison shots
