Mhucasey's SPS obsession

Sorry for the surgeries matt, hope the corals will recover with no issues!

Aquaforest has draw some hype these days and happy you will try it.
Really interested to see what will happen. Thanks for sharing.

Did you get the all the products matt,or some specific?

Debora's corals are indeed beyond this world.

Well, a little more tissue loss today on the big colony as well as the echinata, so I had to so some surgery:( I tested Phosphates and was at 0.09 - which means that the 400Ml of good looking pellets aren't doing much. I went ahead and pulled the trigger on the Aquaforsest products, I'm giving something new a try.

oh boy!!! I'm very excited to hear this Matt! I will be watching closely..
I am also seriously considering aquaforest but i kind of feel the same way i feel about zeo: a lot of bottles.. maybe I'm wrong... I will live vicariously through you and fins out! :)
I always wonder what will happen when i go away, when I have so many things to add..
Can everything be put on dosers, or added only once a week?
The aquforest tanks on RC are absolutely stunning.. I hope the system is less "hit or miss" than zeo seems...

Do you use a peristaltic pump to pull the effluent from the reactor? From what I understand that is the key to making the reactors easy to set and run.

I wouldn't try a calrx without a quality peri pump and carbondoser reg. It really does make it set and forget. As easy as 2 part ime. I use a geo 612 reactor on my 75 gal display. I have about 2 dkh per day demand.

Using the 2 pieces of equipment mentioned makes it so simple. When I opened up the reactor to clean and refill with media, I simply hooked everything up and plugged it back in and BAM...right back to where it was before. Perfectly dialed in.

I ordered a bunch of stuff, but specifically to replace the pellets they said this would do:
-NP Pro + Pro Bio S.

+

I will start with a large water change to get the system baselined with their Probiotic reef salt:
ProbioticReefSalt10l.jpg

I also bought the Zeolites, though I won't use them right away:
Zeo Mix
I got some of each of the other items to try:

And the following additives:

Matt, i don't mind dosing stuff, but it looks like only the Bacteria and Carbon source are "needed". The other stuff is for tweaking and improving.

I'm a bit bummed, i have a Cole Parmer Peristaltic pump of the right size and what not, but its not the brushless DC motor. It's LOUD. I need to find a different pump. I think I'm convinced that the GEO 618 Reactor is the best buy for the tank with a carbondoser electronic regulator.

Oh that sucks. I just found the calrx dream model 7523-60 on eBay. The seller was asking 350 but I sent an offer for 250 and we settled at 260. I wasn't even really looking as I already have a 7523-70, same pump with a less desirable gearing, but couldn't pass it up.

Long story short keep your eye on eBay. The seller may have more units and it never hurts to shoot someone an offer.

Also if you're buying the geo new, tell George you're planning on using a masterflex. He will tap the lid for you as well to vent extra gas.

Both the model numbers I gave are the brushless models and are dead silent.

The head is an easy load head model 77200-60, which should fit on some of the digital brushless models, maybe I can find a deal on motor alone.

Can you give me a quick idea on how to pick one of these things? What I need to know is the flow rate you are using for your tank on the pump, and if you have insight into their stupid model numbering system. In the Calcium reactor with masterflex pump thread, the following models were mentioned: 7523-60, 7550-30, 77301-20, and 77301-30
Whats not clear is if I find a 7550-90(for example) will that work as well as the 7550-30? Is a higher number faster, slower or what? You have two models in the same series, 7523-60 and 7523-70. What is less desirable about the 7523-70 gearing? Maybe that will help me figure this out:) Thanks in advance!

Do you have a link to a thread that can teach me how those 2 equipments need to be setup with a CR.

I have been always thinking of a CR, but due to my travels I am too scare to setup one.

Thanks
Daniel

There really isn't any rhyme or reason to the model numbers. Google is your best friend. Google the model number and it'll likely take you to the corresponding Cole parmer webpage for that model. There you can usually find the specs.

7523-60 - 10-600rpm
7523-70 - .6-100 rpm

So the -70 models motor spins faster to acheive the same ml/min resulting in more wear and more noise.

Any brushless model with 10-600rpm gearing is ideal for what we are looking to do.

Honestly these pumps are so powerful you could place the unit in a closet across the room, or in a crawl space without issue if you wanted too.

Hope this helps. I can PM you my cell number if you want some quicker assistance while you're hunting for one. Let me know.

Thanks very much! What flow rate range do you pull through your reactor?

Mhucasey's SPS obsession

I'm currently running 32ml/min through my Geo 612 on my 75 gal. My demand is 2dkh per day.

Calrx ph is 6.7 and effluent is 20 dkh

I've been testing a few things for my curiosity since cleaning up the pellets, and found some interesting results.
1) Nitrate seems to have edged down a bit closer to 5ppm. Its been stuck between 5 and 10 but its a little bit lighter than it has been.
2) The filter sock on the outlet of the pellet reactor isn't clogging any longer.
3) Phospahte is dropping. It was 0.09 on Saturday, 0.06 Sunday Morning, and 0.03 Sunday night.
4) Still pulling lots of nasty gunk with the skimmer. Hope you aren't eating breakfast while reading this, but this is just over a weeks worth:

All My Aquaforest products have Shipped, with the exception of the ProBioS. Hopefully that one will be on its way soon. Salt will arrive Wednesday:thumbsup:

Give woody a good scratching as a thank you from me matt, for his holiday wishes:beer:

I was almost ready to order AF products too but i thought i'd better wait and see what impact they will have in your tank which is already in a very good shape, with healthy corals and nice colors.
Wondering how further they will push it!
Hope they'll arrive soon and well buddy:thumbsup:
