Mhucasey's SPS obsession

Hey Matt,

personal acro question. :lolspin:

During the night do you have many pods running all over your acros? Probably 1 to 2 cm in size, very fast moving, not sure what they are doing, if anything.

Yes, I occasionally see pods on my Acros- though usually on the Acros that have stuff like bubble algae down between the branches. I'm not sure what they are doing either but they make me nervous.

The corals look very pale, do you have measurable Nitrate? I'd be happy to help you with some suggestions, but keep in mind color preference is very subjective:)
I do have some nitrate 2-5ppm i dose vinegar or it would go alot higher i may up my dose just abit to see if i cant get it down to 0-2ppm, phos. usually stay from 0-.03 ppm i do run carbon and GFO.

2-5ppm Nitrate is perfect. Its probably your lights then.

Hey Matt,

Your acros have amazing colours and hope to improve them even more with the recent changes you made. I red that you dose cano3 , can I ask why you prefered it instead of kno3 or nano3?

Since I only dose small amounts of nitrate every once in a while, any of the three would do. CaNO3 actually has 2 nitrate molecules for each Calcium so if I doses a lot it would only add a minimal amount of Calcium to the tank which is no big deal.

Update:

Very happy with Aquaforest so far. Coming up on three weeks since the initial start of using the products, and the corals are doing really well. I have noticed some really amazing Polyp Extension

and the corals are growing and coloring up nicely.

Phosphate has trended down and now is at 0.05 with my daily dose of 8 drops of NP Pro and 8 drops ProBio S. I also dose about 10 drops Coral B at night to help with Cyano, which is not gone but much reduced. I dose Coral A and V every other night, 4 drops each and slowly working up. I have tried some test doses of Coral E with no ill effects. I am also dosing Flourine and Iodine at 4 drops each every other day.

I am using 500G zeolites in a Vertex reactor with a flow through rate of 55gph. I shake the stones once or twice a day if I remember.

WOW Matt!!!
Your polyps are even colorful, but the tissue is notably illuminating. Looking forward to the lineup, you are looking amazing with pop!!!
Stoked about the products, I am already noticing better PE in just a couple days of dosing :)

How are you liking The calrx setup so far?

It's perfect! I just couldn't wait for a custom vented top so I bought the GEO off the shelf with the idea I could vent it later. It turns out that I can just turn it off for 10 minutes a day and the air will all rise to the top. The peri pump sucks the air out from the normal port during that time and it's all good:)

Wow, your corals are looking extremely healthy! That PE is amazing. Well done

Thanks I'm really happy with the reaction from the corals and want to see where they go from here. The LPS corals in the tanks are also puffed up to the extreme which is a bit surprising. The most surprising thing was the Rose BTA, which has been struggling for a while started improving and is looking 100% better- and I'm not feeding it or doing anything with it.

Matt,
Always love your updates. Sorry to hear about the recent losses. Tank looks awesome as always. How big is that red planet? Mine has been growing like crazy but not tabling yet. Your PE is crazy as well on these pictures!

Thanks, the key with SPS is to know that no matter what you do, some will not make it. That challenge in keeping them is part of the attraction:p
In this case since all the other frags were melting down in the dealers tank I know that at least it isn't my tank that is the problem:dance:

The Red Planet is 6" X 3.5" and 5" tall', started from a 1" frag:)

Nice pics Matt. I really need an amber filter for my phone and camera. The LEDs are so hard to shoot and get good pics.

Glad to hear it. I'm curious if the change you witness will be as dramatic as my experience was....
