So back to our regular scheduled programming...
So the tank has been cruising along and have been battling a few of natures pests and some things I can't explain.
So first off, as many of you have seen, the only thing I can grow fast is chaeto...well that hasn't changed, but the last time I trimmed, I trimmed way too much as after cutting out almost 5 gallons of chaeto, a few days later all my SPS lost color and lost of a few pieces.
I did test thinking that maybe the huge reduction in macro algae caused a bloom of NO3/PO4 but my numbers were still zero (tested with red sea pro kits). I tested the big 3 and it seems this may have been an issue as my Alk was 8.2, Cal was 375 and Mag was 1150. So I've been slowly bringing my numbers back up to acceptable levels, didn't think I'd have any issues with such a small coral load.
I've also lost a few of my fish...most heart breaking has been my male flame wrasse and male anthias, both has impressive color and personality. Flame thought it would be fun to swim through the predrilled loc line holes in the overflow and down the pipe...dead in the filter sock. As far as the male anthias I have no idea what caused its death.
And in true fashion whats a new tank with pretty fish without an ick battle...not sure where it came from but i'll throw it up to not having a dedicated QT (currently in works now). I first noticed some spots on my Purple Tang...then a few on my other flame wrasse...then on the pintail. So in true fashion I was freaking out...started talking with the other FUPA crew and got some good ideas to sooth over the ick problem (not cure but help battle). So the Sargent In Arms...Mr. Tweaked graciously had me over, had a few beers and gave me a few tips and tricks. He sent me home with a nice Aqua UV 25W unit, which I can't thank him enough about.
So I got home and immediately put a QT order in...lol...
List:
Jebao DCT-4000 return pump for UV
Kordon Ick Attack in tank treatment - could be snake oil but i'll take the chance
Seachem Garlic Guard - have always used garlic before, figured I should start it again
5lbs cermaic rings - Goal here is to hang a bunch of bags in my sump so that they start becoming bio active and I will be able to use these for QT tanks to have established bio media
Seachem copper test - obviously reasons for QT tank
PraziPro - treatment for flukes
Seachem Ammonia Badge - Keep tabs on ammonia levels for QT tank
Once I collect all the items needed for a proper QT I will most likely do the dreaded fallow period of 72 days and treat the community of fish to a few rounds of copper. But since hooking up the UV, adding the Ick Attack and soaking LRS food in garlic I have noticed positive results in the fish. All fish have been eating very well the entire time so my hopes are high for the tank to pull through.
Well....that's it for now...will report back soon
